Cannonball Stop (Tag: Hermes)
There were two things that Hades particularly loved about the modern world. The first thing was cars. The second thing was Top Gear. Coincidentally, this sometimes also featured cars. His affinity had gotten particularly bad in the last twenty years. In the beginning they had been boxy and buggy and completely inferior to his horses, but then the fifties rolled around, and Hades somehow stumbled upon a 1957 Chevy Bel Air. Black. Hades' horses were still better. Hades would not replace them for anything. Anything. "But within the next 24 hours, all four of them had mysteriously decided it was time to retire and there was nothing Hades could do except honor their years of hard work by purchasing almost every remotely sporty looking vehicle that came along.
His favorites were housed in a large garage on the mortal plane fairly close to an Underworld entrance, where they were arranged alphabetically from the Aston Martin to the Viper. They each had some kind of significance, and Hades did not let anyone touch them, or drive them, or even enter the garage. Occasionally, he would allow someone to come in and maintain them, but that was the extent of it. Once a naiad had gotten in and crashed the Merc into a stop sign. That naiad was currently on display at the Herakleidon Museum of Art.
Hades did not have a lot of spare time. Modern technology definitely helped, but it didn't change the fact that his realm grew each and every year. There was no such thing as an Underworld recession. Still, when Hades did manage to get some time to himself, he liked to go to the garage to just admire them, or to take one for a spin somewhere. This was one of those occasions.
He arrived early that night. Hades had just started walking down the line when he stopped. And frowned.
One of the cars was missing.
