Sometimes a Dream is a Dream... and Sometimes It's More [tag: Odin]
It was a typical quiet, chilly winter night in Valaskjalf. The fire in the fireplace of the private quarters Frigg shared when her husband was actually in Asgard was nothing but a pile of glowing coals. Even with the drapes pulled, the moonlight reflecting off the snow outside was bright enough to pour into the room from the split between them, giving a slightly ethereal glow to the bodies entangled in the sheets.
Under a mass of blankets and furs, the Foremost Among the Asyniur had a bare arm artfully draped over her husband as she nestled in tight to him. Odin was a notorious wanderer and she relished every moment they had together. Even if it sometimes seemed that the bulk of that time was spent sleeping off exertions.
Frigg twitched slightly in her sleep. She was dreaming. A dream she had time and again. Always the same. Never with explanation. She had her suspicions as to the meaning, but as one who knew the fates of all and was frequently plagued with prophetic dreams, she knew how to distinguish a dream from prophecy. A dream was usually just a dream.
As always, there was snow on the ground of a densely wooded forest. Silently, an Eurasian Lynx slinked through the trees. It was on the trail of something. Something it wanted. Prey. Nearby an Arctic Fox pounced on the snow, assumingly to get at the mice burrowing below. The soft padding of paws as it pounced and dug in the snow was the only sound. A moment later, chaos erupted. There was running, there was chasing, and somehow there were suddenly many lynx chasing the one fox.
Working as a unified team, the lynx managed to corner the fox against a rock wall where one leader stepped forward, grabbed the sly creature by the neck and laid down. The lynx laid there as the sun set and rose again with the fox held between its paws and in its jaws. The fox wasn't dead, but not wholly alive either. It was simply... trapped.
The sun rose and set, rose and set, rose and set. This would normally occur until some external stimulus would wake the Norse Queen. But tonight was different.
For the first time the dream continued. The fox started to struggle in the jaws of the lynx. Its will to live had been restored. But it was going nowhere. The lynx bit down harder, drawing blood to stain the clean, white fur. A large paw raised up and rested over the midsection of the fox to try to still it. Yet, the fox continued to fight.
The other lynx returned and the cunning fox reached up and used one paw to claw at the eye of the lynx that was holding him. Suddenly it was free and running across the snow as fast as it could. The lynx chased it through the forest without giving regard to the terrain.
Frigg stirred. Her arm undraped over Odin and she rolled onto her back.
The fox looked back at the lynx chasing it periodically, and it almost appeared to be smiling. There was a cliff up ahead and the fox knew it. Leading the lynx forward, it slowed pace just a bit, only so that the lynx would think they were making ground to catch it. At the edge of the cliff, rather than stop, the fox leaped over the edge, confident it would survive.
Asleep, Frigg's body began to toss and turn, deeply disturbed by the sights in her dreams.
In an instant the fox's body morphed and changed. Feathers replaced the fur, a beak the muzzle, wings and talons the legs. The fox was free. The fox was an eagle in flight. Before the lynx could stop, they slid off the edge of the cliff, plummeting to their deaths. Then the now eagle turned it's head, as if to look at the dreamer and screeched.
Frigg lurched awake into a sitting position. She was sweating and her heart racing. A hand went up to her chest, the other to her face, in an attempt to assure reality. This dream that had been simply a dream for so long was now, it appeared, something more.
