Everything that she'd said, everything that she'd done before then suddenly made perfect sense. If he'd taken it right out of her head, he doubted it would have come with such clarity.
Nanshe didn't have clarity right now. What she had was fractured reality, and bits and pieces of things that, he knew, didn't feel like they belonged to her. They just hurt.
He left.
Morpheus swallowed.
"Oh."
He couldn't make his mouth do anything else. Just form that one syllable. And Nanshe was shaking.
Morpheus shut his eyes. Shamash, he decided, then, was a fool. And so, Morpheus knew, was he. Who in their right mind would leave Nanshe? EVER? What were they thinking?
Without a further thought, Dream hugged her and kissed her forehead.
