He could feel Selena purring around as she rubbed against his legs, her vibrations against his calves. She meowed up at him and he smiled down at her as he checked on his two small patients. One was sleeping, a little dark skinned girl with curly black hair and the other was a fair skinned boy with freckles and a shock of red hair. He was playing with a PSVita, engrossed as he allowed Sam to take his blood pressure.
“Is it good, Mr. Sam?,” the boy asked absentmindedly.
“Yeah, a little more elevated than usual but that's because you're sick,” Sam told him as he took the cuff away.
“Will I be okay?,” the boy asked, looking over a little.
“You'll be fine,” he replied smiling. “Would you like a juice box? Maybe some crackers?”
“No, I feel too sick,” the boy admitted, shaking his head.
“Alright, Noah. Just tell me if you want anything,” he said, just as Selena pounced up on the bed and started stalking toward the kid. “Selena. Bad kitty. You can't be in bed with patients, you know that.” He picked her up and put her down as she meowed, sounding a little pissed off. “Too bad.”
“It's cool, Mr. Sam. I like cats, used to have a couple,” Noah said, grinning.
“That's awesome, but it's bad enough she's in here with us. She'll have to stick to the floor or I'll have to kick her out,” Sam said, chuckling.
Noah pouted. “Can I pet her when I'm better?”
“When you're better,” Sam said, reaching out to ruffle his hair.
Noah had the decency to look embarrassed, shoving Sam's hand away and Sam chuckled again. “Mr. Sam.”
“I'm sorry, kiddo. Just like messing with ya,” Sam said, smiling. “I'm going to go continue reading my book. You go ahead and play. If you need anything, don't hesitate to yell for me.”
“Yes, sir,” Noah said, nodding as his eyes returned to the tiny screen.
Sam walked away, getting in the big red chair with the ottoman. It wasn't like a hospital, where there would be a desk with an uncomfortable chair you would sit for hours in. Infact, it was nice having a comfortable chair while you helped patients but he missed working in hospitals. The medical bay would have to make due and since Flu season was here, that meant a lot of people would be getting sick because of this whole dystopia thing.
A month and a half ago they managed to find flu shots but not enough. They'd have to find some way to stock up for next year. The flu was usually something you could prevent and death was avoidable but it would seem it was more likely to happen now. Selena jumped into his lap as he picked up his random dollar store book about a man digging a hole in his back yard to build a pool. It had something to do with Hollywood deadbeats, people trying to make it in the industry and failing miserably. Drugs were involved too, with the usual drama. Not particularly interesting but it passed the time. He reached down and started petting Selena from the top of her head to her neck, reading one handed, as he listened out for the kids.
