rp log - maggie and felix
Characters: Maggie McKinnon and Felix Hopkirk
Setting: Backdated to late evening of Sunday, 8 July, 1981, at Felix’s flat.
Summary: Maggie and Felix talk about things, including Leo’s future, and then share a surprise kiss after fifty billion years (except not really).
Rating: PG-13
Maggie had been pretty good at keeping things that were bothering her bottled up, especially when the time to worry about them was not right. Such as a day out to the Muggle zoo with her baby and his father. When Leo was busy clapping his hands at the grizzly bear that was walking back and forth in its habitat, why did she need to concern herself at the moment with what was going on in the wizarding world? But the day at the zoo had soon come to an end and dinner had been made and eaten at Felix’s place. While he was off putting Leo to sleep, and Maggie had done the dishes (which hadn’t really taken her that long to begin with), she had time to sit and let her mind wander. To anything, really. Ashley’s proposal, their mother’s confession to being part of the Order, people dying on day two of this month. More bad than good. And so absorbed was she that she didn’t even realize when Felix had entered the room. Felix couldn’t help but notice that Maggie had seemed distracted most of the day. He hadn’t mentioned it, mostly because he was just glad they were spending the day together. It had been pretty brilliant hanging out with the two of them. Not just because he loved spending time with Leo, but he liked it when Maggie felt comfortable enough to hang out with them too. It felt like back when they were together, minus a kid. Leo finally went to sleep, and Felix turned the light out, closing the door halfway so they could still hear him if he woke up. Noticing Maggie sitting at the table, he came in, standing in the doorway for a moment. She was so lost in her thoughts that she hadn’t even noticed him come back in. “He’s out like a light,” Felix finally said, leaning against the doorway with his arms crossed over his chest. Maggie started when she heard his voice, and she looked up at him for a few seconds to realize she had just zoned out. “Oh,” she said, giving him the best smile she could muster up. “Good. Yeah, I figured he would be. It was a long tiring day for him.” She gestured toward one of the chairs, indicating that he was welcome to sit with her. Returning her smile, Felix walked towards the kitchen table. Suddenly deciding that cookies and milk sounded like a really good idea, he changed course and headed towards the cabinet, taking out a package of chocolate chip cookies and putting some on a plate. He turned back around and held up the package so Maggie could see it. “Cookies?” he asked, setting the package down and pulling out two glasses so he could pour them some milk. He knew that cookies and milk always made him feel better, even if his mum didn’t bake cookies as much as she used to but he’d always loved them. “Mum used to make fresh ones and I’d eat them right out of the oven and burn my hands.” Felix smiled fondly at the memory. “Or I can make tea,” he offered. “Milk is fine,” Maggie said, with a slight laugh. She knew he did... he once burned his hands when she once made them. But she kept herself from bringing it back up. To be honest, there were a lot of their memories from their living-together days that constantly came back to haunt her the more time she spent with him but she kept herself from mentioning any of them. Why? She had no idea, because not mentioning them didn’t really help squash them. When he brought over the milk and cookies, she reached over to take a handful. “I got a journal ward from Mum while you were giving Leo his bath. She said she was staying with Ashley for the night.” Then after a hesitant pause, she added, “And I told her I’ll stay in your guest bedroom because I don’t want to be home alone. That’s.. fine, right?” Pouring the milk and bringing over the plate of cookies, Felix sat down, sliding one glass over to Maggie and keeping the cookies in the middle. “Yeah, that’s fine. Of course.” He’d been very careful lately because he didn’t want her to think he was trying to change their relationship in any way. He’d already learned his lesson from before and he was starting to be content with this shaky friendship they had. People who had a child together could be friends, right? Felix took a bite out of his cookie and chewed slowly. “You seem like you’ve had a lot on your mind,” he said in a cautious tone, not wanting to overstep any boundaries. Maggie nodded and muttered a “good” at his confirmation. The guest bedroom. Which was fine. This was probably the first time she’d actually be sleeping under the same roof after he had dumped her and she’d left him but... this was all fine! Why had she requested milk instead of alcohol? “Oh, it’s just... I’m just thinking, you know? Mostly of Mum going back to the DMLE and all. But.. that’s all.” “You’re worried about her?” he asked, knowing she was. Mrs. McKinnon was going back to work at a very dangerous time. Even if he and the McKinnons weren’t all big fans of each other, they were still his son’s family and it seemed natural to sort of be as worried about them as much as he was worried about his own family. “Your mum is a good Auror.” Felix took a bite into another cookie, staring at his glass of milk before looking up at Maggie. “Yeah, she is good,” she mumbled, though it sounded more like she was saying it to herself instead of the bloke across the table from her. There was absolutely no way she was ever going to tell Felix of her involvement with the Order, but Maggie honestly didn’t need to think about the Order much... she’d been completely okay with her mother joining the DMLE before Maggie found out about the Order and the news on her being part of the Order came as a bit of a shock, but it was probably nothing compared to the unease she had been starting to feel since the death of two PAT members, one of which was a Death Eater -- and her future step-father’s brother. He wasn’t really good at this stuff, mostly because he didn’t always know what to say exactly. Felix figured the best thing he could do for her was to listen, which he didn’t mind at all. That was always how it’d been in their relationship. Felix considered himself a good shoulder. “But...?” he asked, knowing there was a ‘but’ attached to that. Leo would be out for the night, so there was no chance he was going to wake up anytime soon and they would have time to talk. Maggie gave him a shrug, her eyes going from her half-empty glass of milk to Felix. “I don’t think I realized how scary this war is until Ashley’s brother turned out to be a Death Eater. I know that my dad didn’t do anything at all and he was killed but now, with Mum actually in the heart of the war, what if--” She stopped herself right there because she was pretty sure she was on the verge of a panic attack, cupping her hands over her mouth. Because what the hell would she do if she lost both her parents? Felix watched Maggie and realized she was about to have a panic attack. And so, without even thinking, he scooted his chair over and put his arms around her. He hated seeing her upset or crying and he’d already vowed to himself he never wanted to make her cry again. So he hugged her. It had just been an instinctual thing to do, though he was wondering if she was going to reject him. He didn’t want to think about that. He just kept his arms around her. This seemed right. Maggie didn’t hesitate for too long (though, yes, she still did hesitate). Her arms slipped around his waist and she leaned over, to play her head against his shoulder. It did feel right. She could have moved away and assured him that she was okay, but even after she managed to calm down, she didn’t push off. If anything, she hugged him even closer. An imperceptible sigh of relief escaped Felix when Maggie didn’t push him away and even hugged him closer. Thank Merlin! Not wanting to ruin the moment, he didn’t say anything and just sat there quietly. “We have a brilliant kid,” he remarked randomly, thinking about Leo and how fascinated he’d been at the zoo today. “I know,” Maggie replied, lifting her head to rest her chin on his shoulder, so her response didn’t come out mumbled. Focusing away from the war and on the beautiful baby boy they had made together seemed like a better idea than dwelling. “Maybe he’ll be a magizoologist when he grows up.” “He’d make a brilliant one. He was so fascinated by the animals and it seemed like he was distinguishing between them,” Felix said in an amazed voice. Everyday, their son amazed him more and more, it was like he could never get enough of him. “I can’t wait till he starts walking by himself.” He grinned at the thought. Like him, that kid would probably be everywhere and get into everything. Felix could not wait. Maggie laughed slightly, moving back to look at him. Her arms, however, she didn’t move away. “You’ve seen him. He already pulls himself up by holding onto something and then has no idea what to do. Let’s just cherish the time before that happens, otherwise, we’ll be having marathons running after him.” Merlin help her, she thought, if Felix hadn’t shown back up. Maybe he would have come back sooner though, if she had made an effort to let him know that she had decided to keep the baby from the beginning. But she hadn’t even bothered to tell his sister or anyone and ask them to give him the message. Granted that there was more to it.. like how he’d left the impression that he hadn’t wanted anything to do with the baby, but now, as she looked at him, there was a slight stab of guilt for not doing something herself. “Thank you for coming back, Felix.” “At least we’ll get our exercise,” Felix responded with a laugh. “I’m torn between wanting him to be walking and wanting him to stay like this forever,” he admitted, his eyes automatically glancing in the direction of the bedroom where their son was sleeping. He wanted to keep Leo as a baby forever, even if the kid could be a little brat sometimes, but that was only natural. He was his father’s child after all. Felix looked momentarily confused at what she said, before realizing what she meant. “You’re welcome.” He didn’t need to tell her again that he’d come back for her and found so much more than he ever thought he would find. “I’m glad I did too. I never would’ve met my little guy.” "Yeah," Maggie agreed with him. That's what mattered right now. He was back in his life. And hers. Before she could think of what she was about to do, Maggie suddenly leaned in closer, her lips lightly brushed his before she pulled back immediately. Oh, god. This was not good. "Um. I.... I should probably get some sleep." Well, colour him shocked. Felix’s jaw dropped a bit after Maggie pulled back. She had just kissed him, right? Then he noticed her recoiling a bit and trying to make excuses and Felix signed internally. Now that she’d let go of him, he reached over and grabbed her face with both of his hands. “Wait,” he said, trying to calm her down. Well, he could only think of a few things he was good at calming her down with. So Felix kissed her again. If Maggie even wanted to pull away at this point, she couldn’t. It was her time to be shocked this time, but that shock only lasted for a second before she was kissing him back, her own hands reaching up to the back of his neck and hair. It had been far too long. Too long since she not only had kissed him, but kissed anyone. Hell, she hadn’t even kissed any of the blokes Gemma had set her up with (save for the kiss on the cheek that she had given Stuart). Maybe it was because she’d never want to kiss them like she’d kiss Felix. And so, this one last longer than she’d have expected and when they finally ended, she felt like she was taking a breath again after a while. Bloody hell, that felt fantastic. That also felt like she wasn’t about to keep their relationship at an arm’s length. “Felix, I... that...” Probably shouldn’t have happened. “I need to think. I mean.. about... this. You. And me. Give me some time." Maggie took a deep breath and looked at him, giving him a small smile, so not to make him think she was completely backing away. "Please?" Felix didn’t even have time to be shocked that this was happening. The fact that this was happening made him act fast and he didn’t want her to flip out. But for some reason, she was kissing him back and seemed to be enjoying it. He was definitely enjoying this. He’d admittedly dated and kissed a few ladies when Maggie had decided she was going to move on, but this was where he’d always ultimately wanted to be. When she finally pulled back, he studied her face carefully before dropping his arms, but not before reaching out and tucking a piece of hair behind her ear and giving her an understanding smile. Of course he wanted her to be sure, not just that this was a mistake or she was finally giving in or something. Not at all. He wanted her to want to be with him. “Yeah, of course,” he breathed out, still trying to catch his breath from that rather unexpected kiss. “Thank you.” This was definitely something she would have to talk to her mother about. After everything that had happened starting from the announcement that she was pregnant, Maggie owed her mother that much. And probably a lot more. She pulled her chair back, slightly, to give herself room to get up. As much as she really wanted to kiss him again, she held back. At this point, she was going to have to figure things out for herself before even thinking of doing anything. But she did give him a smile with a “Goodnight” and then turned to head for the guestroom. |
