Characters: Maggie McKinnon and Felix Hopkirk, with Leo McKinnon
Setting: Noon of 1 June, 1981, at Felix’s flat
Summary: Maggie and Felix share a ~moment~ before they go off to visit Leo’s paternal grandparents.
Rating: PG
Leo gave a cry from the high chair, and Maggie shook her head. “No, that fake cry isn’t going to work.” She paused and looked up from the stove at her son who immediately stopped. “One more minute, okay? We don’t want to burn your mouth. Too hot food will hurt!” She gave him a smile and it seemed like Leo sighed stubbornly and looked away while sticking his spoon into his mouth. Well, at least sucking on that would keep him from crying out again, Maggie thought, as she looked back at his lunch she was making. Lunch at Felix’s house. She hadn’t been there since before he had confessed his love for her. Since then, things had been cool and almost professional as she dropped him off during the weekends with Felix, barely even able to look at him in the face. It wasn’t that she had decided to stop dating around after that either. She just became busy. This weekend, though, Leo was going to spend time with his grandparents -- Felix’s parents -- but they had insisted on having Maggie over as well, and who was she to deny that? Despite everything that happened with her and Felix, she had nothing but respect for Mr. and Mrs. Hopkirk. And so, before she and Felix went to see them (and while she waited for him to get ready), she was in his flat, cooking up a little something for Leo to have so he could play with no fuss while the adults had their lunch. Things with Maggie had been .. well, different, since Felix’s little episode at Maggie’s house. Since that night, he’d decided enough was enough and it was time for him to move on. However, they were going to be in each other’s lives for the rest of their son’s life, so it wasn’t like they couldn’t be civil. So Felix took every feeling he had for Maggie and he buried deep down inside himself. He didn’t want things to be weird between the two of them. So Felix acted civil, for Leo’s sake. He just tried not to think about the fact that Maggie was dating again. Sure, he’d said he was going to date again, but he was too busy with work to date... right? Coming out of his bedroom, he stopped for a minute to take in the sight of Maggie cooking for Leo in his kitchen. It definitely brought back fond memories and he smiled to himself before stepping in to the kitchen, the smile now dropped into a more serious, civil look. “Hey,” he told Maggie before turning to Leo who was about to toss the spoon he’d been preoccupied with. Smiling at his son, Felix reached down to him to pick him up, in which Leo waved his arms out in anticipation of being picked up. “Alright, big boy,” Felix said, picking up his son and settling him against him. “let’s get you some food before grandpa and grandma get here, hmm?” Leo spit up in response. Maggie vehemently ignored the pang she felt in her heart when she turned back with the food and saw Felix holding him. She had answered with a “hey” back but was slightly occupied with pouring the food into another container. They had gotten closer, she could see. It was good, definitely, for Leo, but not so good on Maggie’s own feelings. Feelings she still had no idea how to define. The stoic look on her face, did, however, melt when Leo spit up and she had to hold back a laugh as she picked up a washcloth and walked over. She reached up and wiped her son’s face with one clean end. “Leo, don’t you start being fussy. I told you that you had to wait.” “Gross!” Felix exclaimed, still grinning though at the little boy that was in his arms. The time he’d been spending with his son had been amazing. Felix was still in awe that he and Maggie had created this tiny human being and pretty much everything he did was amazing. His troubles now mostly lay with trying to deal with Maggie and seeing her all the time. That definitely wasn’t easy. When Maggie finished wiping him up, Felix put him back in the high chair, strapping it up. He was always extra careful around Leo because even Felix could admit that he was sometimes forgetful. Looking at the clock, he noted the time. “My parents said come over in 20 minutes,” Felix told Maggie, straightening out his shirt. He knew that meant his mum was making sure the house was baby-proofed and cleaned up. They were so particular. Maggie gave a nod, walking around Felix and toward the high chair with the bowl of baby food. “That should be enough time to feed him and then get him cleaned up.” Leo was adamant on always feeding himself but that usually meant making a splatter everywhere, so she made sure to have the bowl out of reach as she spoon-fed her son. “Umm, so I haven’t told your parents that we’ll be going on a holiday after Hogwarts lets out,” she started, after a pause. “But I was thinking that maybe if your parents -- or you -- want to have him around for an extended amount of time before that... that would be fine with me.” Looking up at him, she risked it and added a smile to the end of her conversation. “I think my parents would like that.” See, Felix could do civil with Maggie. He’d pretty much convinced himself of that anyways. “How long are you going to be gone?” he asked curiously, sitting down in a chair near the high chair where he liked to sit. Felix thought about asking where she was going, and wondered if that was any of his business. He watched Maggie feed Leo expertly, admiring her momentarily before physically forcing himself to stop watching by getting up and cleaning up at the stove mindlessly. “And where are you lot going?” he finally added momentarily after. He figured that if Leo was going, he should at least know |
