Mariana,
Please forgive the brief nature of this response as I find myself with a limited time to make it. I simply wished to express the pride your father and I have been filled with upon the news of your altruistic efforts to aid a poor soul in need. It will truly be a testament to your skill and everything you’ve learned thus far if you can manage to make a change in this pitiful girl’s life. Do keep us updated on the progress of your project, dear, and remember to send the rest of your designs for the Christmas ball at your earliest convenience.
Yours most sincerely, Your mother.
The letter had arrived just in time for Mariana to feel comfortable keeping her meeting with the mudblood girl. It was most certainly the truth when she’d claimed that she hardly cared what her housemates thought of her actions, but that did not mean that she did not feel entirely more comfortable knowing that her parents could see the merit in her work. She’d made it abundantly clear both to her family and to Mary herself that she had no intentions of befriending the girl, so the permission her mother’s letter provided gave her the incentive to dive headfirst into the project at hand.
She’d set herself off to the side of the Great Hall, arriving earlier than the designated time so that she could prepare herself for the meeting. Though she did not truly care if they were seen conversing, she had the feeling that Mary would not enjoy the inevitable attention. She also cared very little for Mary’s feelings, but knew that it would be infinitely harder to make any progress without some minor level of comfort.
Settled and left with time to spare, Mariana sipped idly at a mug of rather bitter pumpkin juice as she flipped through a catalogue one of the dressmakers she frequented had sent her, raising an eyebrow to the moving models within the pictures as she gestured occasionally for them to spin so that she could see the dresses to their full extent.
