Kingsley was in no mood to deal with anyone now, and he shouldn't have granted Rita's request. It was her birthday though, and as much as Kingsley disapproved of Rita's behaviours, birthdays trumped pretty much everything. Besides, if she was coming to see him that meant she was alone. Even angry and spiteful Kingsley didn't have the heart to let a girl be alone on her birthday. It occurred to Kingsley that Rita only had her friends, she didn't have anyone special in her life. Had she ever had a boyfriend? Or anyone to talk to, really? If the girl needed to talk, Kingsley was alright with that. He had no idea Gilderoy had already passed Rita juicy gossip, and would likely be oblivious when Rita started asking specific questions.
The bit about having a present was a lie. When Rita announced she was coming over, Kingsley had sloppily transfigured wrapping paper around a bottle of firewhiskey and an old box of chocolate from Christmas. He figured Rita would mind, and she probably wouldn't even eat them. It had actually been pretty lucky that he'd found them. Upon hearing the knock at the door, Kingsley waved it open with his wand. He had no desire to get up and open it himself. "Hello Rita," Kingsley greeted. His voice came out colder than he'd meant to, but he figured Rita wouldn't care.
