Look at Little Sister
Who: Colin, Eli, and Emma, later Max
What: Visiting family
When: August 14th, Thursday Evening
Where: The Stumble Inn
Warning: Language

Emma had been ridiculously busy for her lack of commitments. Which had Colin even more interested in what was going on his youngest sister's life. While he was the most understanding in the family of Emma's need to make her own way in the world, she could get carried away. Often.

He'd given up on trying to get a call back to schedule time to meet with her and just decided to choose a slower weeknight evening to show up at her place of work. Dressed casually in jeans and a button down shirt, he headed straight for the bar when he spotted his sister's black dyed head. Sitting down at an empty stool, he waited until she came over. "You are a hard woman to pin down, Emma," he teased her. "Did I make inadvertantly make you mad enough not to return my calls or were you just trying to make me play hide and seek?" His littlest sister loved to play games. She swore she hated politics, but there was a set of politics that had to be played with her to keep her from shutting him out the way she had the rest of the family.

Out of all of her family members, Emma liked Colin the most. Colin didn't look down his nose at her, and she appreciated that more than she'd ever admit. When she began to morph her appearance from a curly haired brunette to a black haired, raccoon eyed rebel, he never said a word. Occasionally he would try to insert a voice of reason when it came to her behavior towards the rest of he family. He was the only one that ever made her feel like a guilty child when he did. Everyone else's scolding pleased her. It was exactly what she wanted from them. From Colin, not so much.

"I've been busy, butthead," she tossed over her shoulder, before turning away from restocking empty liquor bottles to face her brother. "I've got shit to do, dead bodies to bury in the basement, parents to annoy, you know, important stuff." Wasn't his version of important stuff, not with him being a part of the Hammond political machine, but she didn't like his version. It came with black ties and tight collars. No thank you.

"So you found me. I guess you win."

Colin was the only one in the family who understood Emma's need to rebel. Although their family had nothing on his dangerously oppressive in-laws, the sentiment was the same. If anything, Colin was rebelling vicariously through his sister and only saw fit to reign her in when she upset things too much or was doing something dangerous to herself.

He scoffed at her list. "Please, you know better," he scolded in a teasing tone. "The bodies go in the foundation of unfinished buildings where they'll never be found. Get it right." If he didn't meet Emma's show of inappropriate sense of humor at her level, he would never get anything out of her.

"Yes, I win," he said. "I hope my prize involves some burbon and why that scruffy man who looks remarkably like your boss over there is staring at us like that." He caught his eyes and offered the man who couldn't be that much younger than himself a slight salute. Apparently Emma had gained an admirer. It would be amusing to see how he handled the situation, since he obviously hadn't figured out who Colin was.

"Basements work in a pinch. I'm too tiny to haul bodies around Chicago easily." She went and got him his drink, but kept her face blank regarding the scruffy part. Damn Colin and his stupid eyes that saw things they weren't supposed to. Eli needed to work on his poker face, she was going to have to kick him for that one. This was not how things were supposed to go between her family and Eli.

"My boss doesn't like you, don't salute him, you'll only make him mad. Max is real mean and he bites. You're only going to rile him up." Evade and ignore, it was the best way to go about this. She never let her eyes move to where Eli was, keeping her gaze locked firmly on Colin's, daring him to tell her she was lying. Emma was part of their family, after all, and lying was the first thing all tiny political cogs were taught as children.

"That's why you hire thugs to do it for you, dear Emma," he quipped. It was a little bit of wicked fun to poke at the ill stereotypes of the world Colin was fully entrenched it. "It keeps the economy healthy and all that."

Colin rolled his eyes. "Well, I'll go introduce myself then," he said as he shifted off his stool. "I'm certain he'll feel better when he knows who I am." Yes, he was calling her bluff. Now he was very interested in who the man was. Especially since he glimpsed the man's duplicate wandering around the bar somewhere. Interesting...

"Not all of us have the money to hire good thugs, butthead. Some of us have to do the heavy lifting all on our own." Shunning the family meant shunning the money. While it was hard having to work to earn a living, it was a lot more freeing than chaining herself to the family bank account. She'd take this any day over the fake smiles.

"Don't, he's insane, they just let him out of the hospital yesterday and politicians turn him into a rage beast," she said quickly, though calmly, still holding onto the image of having little regard for the person who she was going to punch in the arm later on that night. "I thought you were here to see me. Why bother with him?"

"Because I wouldn't help you out?" he teased, eyes crinkling in humor. It was rather fun to parry back and forth with her. His relationship with Mia was softer, Emma's rapier wit was fun though.

Colin's brows went up. "I was wondering why you were too busy to return my calls, Emma," he reminded her, then took a drink of his burbon. "Now I think I know why." He set his glass down and gave her a look. "Emma, remember who you're talking to. I'm not Mom, or Dad, or Mia. If you've got a new beau, so long as he makes you happy, treats you well, and isn't your married boss, I don't really care who he is." He gave her a pointed look.

"So let's start over," he said. "How have you been, littlest sister?"

"Drag a politician and a lawyer into my nefarious deeds? I might as well just walk up to the prison and declare myself guilty. Or I'd have to kill you, too, which would really suck because then there'd be no Hammond's around that are tolerable." This was why she liked Colin so much. Colin didn't expect anything more of her than what she was. No need to live up to perfection for her brother.

When he called Eli her beau, though, she doubled over in laughter. What was it with her siblings and outdated words? "You found me out," she said in a heavy southern accent, bringing her hand to her chest. "I've had a gentleman caller, dear brother. He's a biker just getting out of Riker's. We're married now and I'm pregnant with his mini Hell's Angel. We're going to name it Harley, of course." Wasn't too far from the truth. Eli was going to be her husband, and a lot sooner than anyone would expect it, Colin was no exception.

Colin laughed. Because the all of that was completely ridiculous and probably not even a quarter of it was true. Emma obviously had a thing for him, so it would be worth needling more actual details out of her. Or at least the name of her new boyfriend so he could do a proper background check on him. "Well, now I know what to get for the baby shower," he teased wryly before taking another drink. "I'm sure they make leather jackets in newborn size."

Now it was his turn. "Elise will be thrilled," Colin continued. "She'll have someone to mommy talk with. It'll be a lovely way for you two to bond." Now it was her turn to try and figure out how much he was bullshitting her.

"No pink, please, we're sticking to blacks only." The thought of a baby shower gave her the creeps, because it was such a foreign idea to her. She was not a baby person in the least, but she'd be willing to learn for Eli's sake. It was important to him, so it would be something important to her.

She arched a brow at him. "You're gonna let me corrupt your kid? Awesome. I'm buying nerdy things only, and probably the loudest, most annoying toys I can find on the shelf." It was possible for Elise to be pregnant. She knew they wanted kids, but if it was true, she figured the announcement would be a lot more grandiose than sitting in a bar on a Thursday night while Spock glared at them from the corner. Boy was going to really have to learn to rein it in.

Colin noted his sister storming outside but ignored it. If she refused to explain herself, then he wasn't going even indulge her tantrum. He didn't even understand what she was so upset about, since she wouldn't tell him.

"I apologize for that," he told Eli as he sat down. "Emma is the youngest and I'm the worst about spoiling her. She's used to getting her way with me, but sometimes even I tire of her constant games. You wouldn't happen to have any idea why she wouldn't want us to talk? You seem to be quite willing yourself, which I appreciate, by the way."

Eli winced when Emma stormed out. Yeah, angry, definitely. Anxious. He knew that she didn't want to let the cat out of the bag just yet and he really couldn't blame her, but now that it was out, there wasn't any point in avoiding the conversation with her brother. It wouldn't be that bad. He kept telling himself that and finally the flush started to dwindle away from his cheeks.

He took another sip from his beer as Colin spoke. "I think she's just worried," he told Colin honestly. "She didn't want to go public with us until she was ready and I think that's pretty much been blown out of the water now," he shrugged. "I don't see any point in not talking to you when you already know we're together," he said simply. He managed a little smile. "You seem like a decent guy so far. I'm not really sure what she was so afraid of. I guess she just doesn't want tabloids to be all over everything. She wants something for the two of us before everyone else got pulled in. And she likes to get her way," he laughed. "I think that's why she's angry."

Colin rolled his eyes. "Hardly," he drawled. "As if I have any reason to tell anyone her personal business. I don't appreciate her bullshitting me and throwing a ten day production over a simple question. If the relationship is so new, then it's understandable she'd like more time before you 'meet the family' as it were. It just would have been nice for her to say so."

He shook his head. "The tabloids will make up more interesting things than is actually happening," he drawled. "Acting like it's the end of the world in a loud and public way like she just did is feeding the jackals. She should know better."

Colin finished off what was in his glass, letting out a chuckle. "A Hammond trait, I assure you," he told Elias. "Honestly, I was just curious. Mostly because you were giving me the side eye. I know what that look means, no matter how much she doesn't want me to. But since I've dragged you over here and she's going to be upset regardless, then I open the floor to your questions. Because I'm sure you have some." What the other man asked about would tell Colin plenty about him, without interrogating or intimidating him. As promised.

Eli figured that Colin wasn't going to go out and feed the paparazzi details of what was going on between he and Emma. There was no reason for him to. "Emma, saying what she's thinking the first go round?," he said, laughing softly. "That isn't going to happen," he smiled. Emma wasn't good with feelings. She wasn't good with serious conversations either. Neither was he, so he could understand. She was just a little more vocal with things she didn't want. Eli was a little more likely to shut down entirely and try to blend into the background.

"The tabloids are bullshit anyway," he shrugged. "She's worried because I look like Max and he's married. She doesn't want them to drag him and his wife into the situation. Which was understandable. "But, to anyone that knows Max, cheating is like the least likely thing ever, so worrying about that is probably doing nothing but giving her anxiety over nothing at all." He could agree with Colin. If she got upset in a public way, more people would pay attention and she'd end up getting the negative side she was trying to avoid anyway.

"I didn't know who you were," he told Colin. "I thought maybe you were an old flame coming to bark up her tree again." An attractive old flame with a shitload of cash. A brother with a shitload of cash was a lot better of an option. As for questions, Eli shrugged his shoulder. "I don't really have much to ask," he told the man honestly. "I'm not falling for her because of her family," he said. "Everything I want to know is about her and I'm pretty sure, with enough patience, I can find things out about her straight from the source." He flashed a smile at Colin.

"I went around with her the first time," he told Eli. "Then she started throwing shit in my path as if I was going hurt you or something. I understand her fine. I just have my limits. Emma knows that."

Colin nodded. "Yes, it would be unfortunate for her to drag your brother into this," he agreed. "Any more than she already did by telling me you were him, you were newly out of prison and hated politicians. Before I did more than acknowledge you were watching us." Just in case Eli was under the assumption he had strong armed his sister into the conversation or he had involved his brother at all.

He chuckled at that. "If you didn't know who I was, then I have no doubt you aren't interested in Emma for the money." Colin shook his head. "Which, by the way, she refuses to have anything to do with. She's very independent and insists on making her own way in the world. I have a great deal of respect for that. But it makes me overprotective of her. Because with money comes security. She is still my baby sister, no matter how much she doesn't be associated with our family." Honestly, everything Eli had shown him so far was encouraging. Now he just wanted a drink.

"Another?" he suggested. "We should at least sit here for awhile and let her stew. Do you follow any hobbies?" There was no reason they couldn't have a pleasant conversation.

He laughed a little and shook his head. "Not newly out of prison," he assured the man. "Not Max, either, just his twin. I can't really say I hate or like politicians, but I don't really go out of my way to meet them." Emma had made it a bigger deal than she probably realized by trying to not make it a big deal.

"Emma and I hit it off before she even let me in on who her dad was," he told the man. "Didn't matter before, doesn't matter now. I'm glad that she wants to do things on her own, just makes me like her that much more." Eli respected Colin's worries for his little sister and he nodded. "I can understand that," he agreed. "I think she does pretty well for herself, though," he said. "She's determined, I'll give her that much." Determined to get her way.

"Yeah," Eli said, finishing off his beer. Another one wouldn't hurt him. And Colin seemed friendly enough. If he was going to have to smooth things over, he might as well at least to get to know the man a little. "I'm into computers," he said. "And music. And a lot of dorky things," he laughed. "Which is part of how Emma and I ended up hitting it off in the first place," he explained. "What about you?," he questioned. "What are your hobbies?" Probably fancy things. Like trading stocks.

"I know you're not your brother," Colin admitted. "I didn't know you were twins though. You certainly look enough alike." He smirked. "Everybody hates politicians. Especially other politicians."

Colin nodded. "She's happy, which is what matters," he told him. "Well, happy overall. She's decidedly unhappy with us right now. But it'll pass. Emma's got a flair for the dramatic. Runs in the family, of course."

Another burbon would be splendid. Colin would be a little tipsy by the time he was done. Which was fine. Oh lord, computers, music, and nerdy things. Had Emma custom ordered him? "My actual hobbies?" he said. "Swimming, scuba diving, yacht and sailboat racing. Anything to do with the water, really. Probably not a surprise, since I'm a water elemental."

Eli smiled. "Not that many differences physically," he agreed. "We couldn't be more different personality wise if we tried," he laughed. He and Max had their similarities, physically mainly but also personality based, but the definitely had more differences. He grinned even more at Colin's response about politicians. "Of course they do," he smiled. "Everyone's a liar, right?"

"It's part of her charm," he said to Colin. "Wild and unbridled. Who wouldn't be attracted to a woman like her on personality alone. The fact that she's gorgeous is just like adding icing on top of it all."

Eli flagged down one of the waitresses and ordered himself another drink and Colin another bourbon. While she went to retrieve those, he turned his attention back to the man across the table. "No," he agreed. "Not surprising. I've never been on a yacht. Or a sailboat. Or scuba diving, for that matter." Of course his lack of funds was showing a little. All those things but swimming sounded like hobbies rich people would have. "I like to swim though," he smiled. "Emma might have a conniption when she discovers we have something in common," he teased.

Luckily Max had been spying a bit from the security camera. He glanced up from counting out bills and watched his twin go stumbling out of view, with Emma following close after him. Then he heard her yelling. Shit...

He was out there as fast as he could. Max had been afraid of that. The argument had gone on too long and when Eli got really stressed out his visions always triggered. "Emma, help me sit him up," he instructed gently.

Once they had him upright, Max took his twin by the shoulders. This didn't ever get any easier to see or deal with, no matter how many times he'd seen it. It bothered him more that for three years Eli had to endure them on his own without Max to pull him out of them. "Eli, bro," he said, cupping his face in one hand. "Come on, come back to me."

Eli wasn't fully there, his breathing was rapid, then it slowed almost to a stop, then grew rapid all over again. His eyes were open but far away. Seeing things, but unseeing at the same time. He didn't say anything because he couldn't. Eli was somewhere far away. Or maybe somewhere real nearby. He couldn't be sure.

Everything was blurry. Hazy. Smoky almost. Fog, maybe? Maybe it was nothing at all. The feelings were what always got him. The fear was so thick in the air around him that he choked on it. He coughed again and again. Confusion was almost as thick as the fear, but not nearly as harsh to deal with.

He heard mumbling. His name? Maybe. He wasn't quite sure. He continued to cough, his breath escaping him.

Emma did as instructed, but she kept Eli held firmly against her, refusing to let go. While Max was trying to get his attention, Emma rested her forehead against his head, whispering in his ear how sorry she was that she was so horrible, that she was sorry she screwed up, that she couldn't be perfect, that she wasn't much of a person, that she'd never be good enough for him, over and over apologizing while those tears that had begun to accumulate earlier spilled down her cheeks. She'd apologize for anything and everything if it would make him come back.

She rubbed his chest once he started coughing, unsure of what else to do outside of holding him, talking to him, and rocking him as she was.

God, this was just not helping. "Emma, this isn't tug of war," he snapped more sharply than he intended. "Hold him still. He can't feel anything, he's somewhere else." Max knew this from trial and error before. The only thing that worked to pull Elias back was talking him back. Literally. "He can only hear us. His brain's taken over. It's all in there."

"Come on, bro," he said, wincing as Eli started rasping. This was the worst part. When he was so far in he would almost stop breathing. "It's Max. I'm here. Come towards me. I got you. Just focus on my voice. It's okay. I'm here. Come on. It's okay. I got you."

There were voices again. Soft ones. Whispers that he couldn't quite make out. Crying? His head turned slightly towards those sounds. Then there was the snap of a voice and his head turned towards Max. The sound. Familiar. He felt himself move towards it. It grew louder. The fear welled up more, his breathing stopped, his face grew pale. He moved towards the sound more quickly, rushing forward until it was loud enough to make out.

Then the bottom fell out and he broke through the edge, falling forward through the future into the present. He sucked in a sharp breath, his eyes going wide as the sight returned to them. The here and the now. "Max?," he gasped out, voice ragged.

It had very little to do with tug of war, and everything to do with the fact that Emma was afraid that if she let go, he'd be lost. Comfort was the only thing she could offer, and so she did what she always did when he needed reassurance. She held him, brushed his hair with her fingers, whispered to him, anything she could think of, she tried. She stopped the rocking when Max told her to, but she still hung on. She was too afraid to let go.

When he went pale and stopped breathing, Emma started to cry in earnest. He was dying, or close to it, that's all that she could think of to explain this situation. She'd never forgive herself if he died here. Thankfully, he drew in a breath and opened his eyes, slowly coming back to reality. She thanked every deity she could think of while she hugged his neck. His hair was wet with her tears, and her face was streaked black due to her makeup, but she didn't care. He wasn't dead, and didn't seem to be dying anymore. The relief that rushed through her was overwhelmingly intense.

Max nodded. "I'm here, bro," he said, moving his hands to grasp his forearms. "It's okay." He looked at Emma. He needed to get her to stop choking his twin in relief now that he was back and breathing on his own. He knew the girl was happy, but she wasn't really helping. "Okay, help me stand him up," he told her as he stood up. "You know the drill, bro."

Eli was always completely exhausted after his visions and needed to lay down someplace for awhile. "That's why there's a couch in the office. Because I knew you'd need it eventually." Once they were up and moving the right direction, he added. "As soon as I find somebody to close, we'll get you home."

Eli was coming back to the present a little bit more with each word that was spoken. He was somewhat conscious of the fact that Emma was holding onto him and crying, but he couldn't seem to find any words to say much of anything to her or to Max. He let himself be grounded in the moment by the words his brother spoke. Yes, he knew the drill. He used both Max and Emma's help to get back to his feet again.

Exhausted was certainly a good word for it. Emotionally, mentally, and physically. "No," he finally managed. "I'll be okay," he promised, not sure if he was talking more to Emma or to Max. "I'll just lay down for a bit. Then I'll be fine," he promised.
