LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]horvendile)

We were asked to introduce ourselves so here I go.

I’m [info]horvendile. I teach college math. I'm a devout atheist. My big passion is music. I am the musician's contact aka head schmoozer for The Budgiedome. I'm a huge baseball fan, I root for the Mets. I love basketball too but my team is the Knicks and they don't really play basketball. I'll be 50 next month. If I post it is usually either simply linking to some study, often relating to beliefs about science or something I think is funny. A silly post can be as worthwhile as a deep analysis. One of the points that I often make here is that the Dominionists are far from having dominion in the country and in there minds lose all the big battles.

I am afraid that some people recently thought I was too harsh on religion. While I do think that religion does more harm than good I have nothing against religious people, many of the people I'm closest to are religious, one will soon be training to be a rabbi and another is in school to be a cantor. Is that like saying "some of my best friends are Jewish?"

I sort of feel about religion the way I feel about reality TV shows. It is a blight but nobody has the right to dictate how other people think about it. I'll religiously fight for the right of people to worship or not worship as they please.

Oh yes, my claim to fame was that I was on Jeopardy and won three times.

Apologies if this has been posted before.  Has anyone seen this? http://christiandomesticdiscipline.com/Home.html

What do you think?

Hating the military?

This post started out as an intro and turned into a discussion on leftist views of the military.

Making the introductions.

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]ambitious_wench)

I'm Ambitious Wench, and answer to the name of Edie both on and off line.

I live and work in Yosemite National Park, working for one of the worst companies in America (No, not the NPS.). I fit uniforms currently, but have sold tourist tchotckies and cleaned bathrooms and made beds, and sold lift tickets at Badger Pass.

I'm a photographer. You can see my stuff here.

How I found D-C: I blame Sunfell. I ran across her journal through a friend's contacts, I think. Decided to read it during the strikethrough debacle, and waited to join.

My beliefs; meh, I suppose I'm rather like Sunfell in this respect. Pagan by association, but bordering on atheist in beliefs.

beyond that, I'm 47, a red-head, lesbian, poly, feminist, and lately discovering that I'm a bit of a loner.

Constantine's Sword is now a documentary

And it looks like Mikey Weinstein and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation are part of it.

I am *definitely* interested in seeing this when it comes to my area.

Introduction

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]nancylebov)

I'm [info]nancylebov here, and Nancy Lebovitz otherwise.

I have a button business--buttons/badges and bumper stickers with mostly humorous slogans.

I'm an agnostic with Taoist metaphysics, Jewish ethnicity, and a taste for neo-Pagan ritual. I'm a liberal-flavored libertarian, which means that I hate government for hurting people rather than for helping poor people.

I just joined the other day. I saw an error, and found that I couldn't comment on it unless I joined.

At this stage, I'm not doing anything active to oppose Dominionism, though I hope that promoting logical argument does some good in general.

How do you decide when something is not just vile (as Dominionism obviously is), but also a clear danger?

Introductory posts

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]wyldraven)

It was actually our intention that the introductions be made as comments to the census post. If you all wouldn't mind, we would very much prefer that to the individual introductions. The potential 1400 new posts would be overwhelming to most of our members. Thanks.

Intro

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]silver_mage) The main things we'd like to hear about you are:
Who you are - your LJ handle (and if you are so inclined, your real name).

[info][info]silver_mage here.

What you do - work, student, whatever. (Again, only be specific if you really want to).

I work as tech support for a small, growing company and work at my school's dorm for nightshift.

Your beliefs - religion, political and whatever else matters to you.
Liberal, nonpartisan and with only a few spiritual inclinations. I go by the belief of "logic first, faith only in people and spiritual faith in case of emergency."

How you came here - what drew you to join DC and how long you've been around.
Now that's a toughie. I honestly don't remember but I do think it was from a cross-post to another comm. I stuck around because the news that gets posted here I don't see anywhere else. It's an excellent resource.

What can you do - what active efforts you are doing or are willing to do to oppose Dominionism.

I usually talk, very openly, about the state of affairs in this country and ask people, "Why?" This, as I found, is the most curious part: when asked why, most people don't have a reason, to which I usually say, "Think aboutit, long and hard." Many are willing to think  save for the few that go off on me for being a "heathen."

One thing I'm sure of: once they know that there's at least one person that can shock them out of their shells, then they'd at least go and analyze why and - hopefully! - that analysis would lead them to a few conclusions that have little to do with religion.

Anything else you'd care to add - your age, sexuality, your family status, whatever matters to you that you want to share with us.
22, aspiring fiction author, straight, divorcee and jazz aficionado.

Intro...

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]anjelire)

Hiya,

My LJ name is Anjelire, real name Angela. I am 36, recently married and moved to Copenhagen, Denmark. I am currently unemployed but still attending school for IT management via an online course begun while still living in the States. I've come to this group by way of some LJ friends and have been watching it oh, for about 3 months now, joining just about 3 or 4 weeks before the member explosion.

I was raised Seventh-day Adventist but am no longer mainstream in my beliefs (not that some SDA beliefs are even mainstream)... I am more Gnostic in my approach to Christianity and currently consider myself well outside the pale of Christianity as a whole. I am studying Shamanism and continue to have a great interest in occult studies. For me, spirituality is a continuum where the surface demarcations disappear the deeper you go.

I am slightly left of the middle in my political leanings and ideology. I am not politically active in any particular group yet, despite generating discussions, giving of my time on occasion to causes and voting.

Spiritually, I work best just by being me. I do not belong to any group or church and if I do so in the future, it will be because I feel there is a mutual need to be met. Right now, I am in flux with emigrating and everything is in a wonderfully chaotic state. There is so much to be done and so many opportunities to be considered generated by this move.

Since joining this group, I have not posted due to wanting to watch the group for a bit and to severely limited online access.

Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself...

Angela

Gay kiss blacked out of high school yearbook

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]amyheartssiroc)

In the 4.5-by-5-inch photo, Jackson is seen turning his head back over his right shoulder and kissing Escobales, 19, of Allentown, Pa. It was blacked out after Russell Garris, the district's assistant superintendent who oversees the city's high schools, told Bolden he was concerned that the photo could upset parents.

The photo was among several others showing Jackson, friends and others -- including heterosexual couples -- that appeared on a special tribute page in the yearbook. Jackson, who paid $150 for the page, questioned the decision to black out the photo, noting that the yearbook is filled with pictures of heterosexual couples kissing.

Here is the picture in question.

Introduction posts

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]sunfell)

Hey, folks- please confine your introductory posts to the intro thread. While it's great the folks are introducing themselves, it's kind of drowning out other posts that are a little more pertinent to the community. If you've gone and made an 'independent' post, please copy and paste it to the intro thread and delete the 'indy' post.

We have nearly 1400 folks here. I figure that about a third are going to post. Please be considerate. Even I posted on the original thread, so there's no excuse.

Thanks, all.

Second Request regarding Intro posts

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]idragosani)

Folks, this is getting to be too much!

As requested earlier, please put your introductory posts in the original census post thread and NOT as individual posts to the community. All of the informational posts are getting swallowed up in the storm.
