When: Monday 3/28
Rating: SFW
Christophe’s friends were all in school, their vacation was a different week, and he was bored. It was his second day in Portugal for the week, where only his mother knew he was gay. After what had happened in Switzerland, he was a little afraid to come out. He was glad to be in his favourite town, his hometown, with his family, but he missed his love. He noted the time difference, knowing that it was the afternoon Ohio. He hoped Joel wouldn’t mind, and dialed his number.
Joel was in the middle of reorganizing his shoes when his phone rang. He smiled, recognizing Chris’ ringer. No one else could have gotten him away from his cleaning. He crossed the room, picking up his iPhone and answering.
“Hello?”
Chris smiled at the sound of Joel’s voice. “Hey, baby. I miss you already. How’s everything in Ohio going?”
“Aww, I miss you too. It’s okay here, still cold. How’s Portugal?” Joel moved back across the room, phone stuck between his shoulder and ear. He sat back on the floor, going back to his organizing.
Chris sat on his bed, grinning as he thought about how great it would be to be with his boyfriend right then. “It’s nice here. Portugal is beautiful in the spring. Er, it’s cold, but it’s nice. It’s great to see my mom and my old friends again... What are you up to over there? You sound... busy? Did I interrupt something?”
Joel only smiled, “I’m reorganizing my shoes. Aren’t you lucky to get to hear it?” He joked, pushing a pair of pointy silver shoes towards the back. He hummed a little, enjoying just having Chris’ there even if he wasn’t actually there. “I wish I was in Portugal with you though.”
“I’m very lucky to get to hear you.” Christophe sighed, “I wish you were here, too. You know I would have invited you, right? If it were that easy... I wish I could show you off to everyone here.” He felt pathetic, thinking about how he couldn’t even admit to his friends in Portugal that Joel existed.
“I know babe, it’s okay.” He told him gently, pausing in his organizing a moment to just listen to Chris. He sighed softly, leaning against the wall. “Maybe some day, right?”
“Yes. Some day soon.” Chis smiled, Joel always made him feel better. “You’ll meet my friends and my mother and it will be just lovely.”
“See, silver lining.” He grinned a bit, going back to his work. “I was thinking of heading home for a while but then realized I have no reason to. You’re gone, my parents don’t care and Vanya’s here...”
Chris felt bad about hearing Joel say his parents didn’t care. “I’m sorry your mother... Acts like that.”
He sighed, “Not just her. It’s my dad too. And my brother, though I’m pretty sure he just got away and ran as far as he could and didn’t look back. Not that I blame him...”
“What are you talking about?” Chris was concerned. He worried about Joel, that he was going through something tough and not talking about it. “What happened, love?”
“My brother, Brian... well, he’s my half-brother. He’s my dad’s with his first wife. He turned 18 and he was gone. I haven’t heard from him aside from Christmas and birthdays since.” He sighed heavily.
“Sorry, baby.” Chris couldn’t help but wonder why he was just hearing about this now. But he shook it off and focused on being there for his boyfriend. “It’s terrible that they would do that to you. I can’t imagine anyone not wanting to talk to you.”
“I should call him...” He murmured in thought. Joel sighed again, staring at his shoes. “Well, there was a time when you didn’t want to talk to me either. I have a lovely way of rubbing people the wrong way or pushing their buttons. Maybe it’s my fault...”
“No!” Chris protested, “I’ve always wanted to talk to you. I love you. You’re amazing, and beautiful. It’s not your fault.” He wished he were with Joel, so he could give him a hug and tell him in person how wonderful he was. Chris had been beginning to forget how much long-distances sucked.
Joel sighed heavily, hanging his head. “I wish I knew what it was then.” He murmured softly.
“You should call him. Talk to him. What’s the worst it can do?” Chris hoped he was helping his boyfriend. He felt guilty that their issues in the past were still making Joel feel bad.
He sighed again, “Maybe tomorrow.” Joel fell silent for a time before he spoke again, “I wish you were here.”
Chris sighed, too. He didn’t mind the short silence. It was nice to know that Joel was just there, on the other side of the phone. “I wish you were here.”
Joel smiled softly, “I would hop a plane tonight if it meant seeing you soon.”
Chris smiled at the thought of that. Without thinking, he replied “Really?”
“Really. Use that credit card of mine and those frequent flyer miles.” He grinned, “I’d love to see Portugal and you.”
Chris just smiled. He was unsure if that was even considerable. His mom would surely allow it, but... “You would love it here.” He didn’t even know where those words were coming from. He didn’t want Joel meeting his friends. What was he doing?
He smiled, “Are you saying you want me to come?” He’d pack right then and there and drive to the airport. “Because I’d love that.”
“I...” Chris didn’t even know. Maybe having Joel there would make it easier for him to tell people about Joel? “I wouldn’t mind it so much.”
Joel grinned, “I’ll start packing now. I can’t wait to see you and see Portugal. You’ll have to translate though, I don’t know Portuguese.”
Chris frowned. How had he not thought of that? Maybe it was better, though. Joel wouldn’t be able to embarrass him in front of his friends. “Well, you can speak French to my mother... Speaking of which, I’d have to ask her, first. I’m sure she’ll let you if there’s space for you on the couch... Hold on.” He put the phone down and went to find his mother who, of course, after asking about a million questions, said yes. Chris hurried back to the phone before he changed his mind and said “She’d love to meet the boy who makes me so happy.” He thought for a moment, “Are you really coming here? Really?”
“Really. I’m packing now. Oh my God, I’m so excited!” He said enthusiastically. Joel was indeed packing. “I can’t wait. This is such a great idea. I can’t wait to meet your mother.”
Chris sighed happily. He hoped it was a great idea. “Oh wow, I’ll leave you to pack, then?” He wanted to stay on the phone, but he wanted to hang up before he changed his mind and told Joel to stop.
“All right. I’ll call and get myself a ticket and be on the next flight over. I’ll let you know when I get in when I know, okay?” he grinned broadly. “I love you baby.” He blew a kiss into the receiver.
“Yeah, uh, e-mail me. I love you, too.” Chris hung up the phone, a small smitten smile on his face.
