Nobody really knew where Marlene got the idea that, if she jumped out of the tree, she could fly. Madilynn and Monica were both adamant, under interrogation by their parents, that neither of them had suggested it to their eldest sister. No, it seemed as though the idea was that of the ten-year-old and nobody else. So Marlene started climbing up the branches until she decided that she was suitably high enough. Her broom lay on the ground, forgotten. Why fly on a broom, after all, when you could try to fly ALL BY YOURSELF? She would be starting Hogwarts next year, after all. She was a witch, so she could fly! Spreading her arms, Marlene leapt from the tree. Instead of flying, she did exactly what you would expect a ten-year-old to do when she jumps out of a tree: she fell. A crunching sound from her right ankle as she landed on it signaled that, not only could she not fly, but also that jumping out of a tree could sometimes cause you to break your ankle. The healer at St. Mungo's was obviously trying not to laugh when they explained how Marlene had broken her ankle. But he healed it all the same, though she had to take it easy on her ankle for a few days afterwards. When she tried it again a week later and broke the same ankle, her parents asked the healer to not heal it quite so well this time, so that it would take longer to heal naturally. Obviously, Marlene needed to learn a lesson: no, she cannot fly. A broken ankle should help her learn that lesson. Hopefully. |
