Roland and Marlene walked across the field, hand in hand, swinging their clasped hands lightly. She beamed up at him, bouncing a little, and he couldn't help but smile. She'd been so excited when he'd suggested they go explore the nearby ruins this afternoon. Despite the four years they'd lived here, they'd hardly done any explorations of the ruins, really. "Oh, look! A bunny!" Marlene dropped Roland's hand and tore off after the bunny, her long pigtail braids flapping like banners behind her. Roland paused, watching his daughter chase the rabbit until it disappeared into its burrow. Then the little five-year-old trudged sadly back over to her dad, pouting a little. Roland laughed and picked her up, swinging her up and over onto his shoulders. She was getting a mite too big for this, but Marlene squealed happily anyway, clinging to his hair with her tiny little hands. She looked almost exactly like her ma, but she had the fiery spirit of her namesake, who Roland was sure would have been thrilled to know that her name and spirit were living on together. |
