Author's Note: For the 100 Prompts #95: Death. I blame Khushi, for making me think of this when she wrote her fic.
Marlene and Madilynn had gathered at the house. Their parents were there, they were now just waiting on Monica, who'd insisted that her whole family be there for her big news. The four of them had been speculating on what the news could be. It could be good or it could be bad, none of them could tell one way or the other from the owls that Monica had sent out. Murray and Marianne sat on the sofa, while Marlene and Madilynn lounged on the floor at their parents' feet. It was just like when they were kids, even though all three girls had finished Hogwarts now. The fire in the fireplace crackled merrily, warming the small room against the chill. The flames flared green, and Monica stepped out. She was greeted with a chorus of hellos from her family. The baby of the family laughed as they then pelted her with questions about her news. "Mon dieu," she said with a smile. "At least give a girl a chance to catch her breath. And wipe the ash off of her clothes." Her hands had been in her pockets, but she pulled them out and started brushing at the ash that clung to her clothes. Marlene saw it first, and she leapt up from the floor, nearly tackling her sister in a hug. "Monica!" she shouted. "You're getting married?" Monica laughed again, hugging her oldest sister, then pulling away to show off the diamond ring that glittered on her left hand. "Aubert asked, and I said yes," she said, positively glowing. She'd been dating Aubert DuChamps ever since she'd met him in France the previous summer, when she went traveling around Europe after having finished at Hogwarts. Monica temporarily disappeared from view as she was enveloped in hugs from her whole family, who congratulated her. Finally, once they were all more or less calm again, Marianne said, "This calls for some celebratory drinks." She slipped away towards the kitchen. Marlene and Madilynn had their arms linked with Monica. "When's the wedding?" Madilynn asked. "Oh, we haven't even set a date yet, honestly," Monica said. "It all just only happened yesterday. I so wish he could have come with me to tell you all, but he had work, and I just couldn't wait any longer." "I'm happy for you," Murray said, resting his hand on his littlest daughter's shoulder. Tears shone in his eyes, and Monica laughed, disengaging from her sisters' arms to hug her father. "Oh, papa, don't cry. You'll always be the number one man in my life. And I'm going to need you to walk me down that aisle when Aubert and I marry." "Of course I will," Murray said. "But I won't always be your number one man. I don't mind giving that title up to Aubert, though." "Did anyone else feel that?" Marianne called, suddenly, from the kitchen. "I think the wards just got knocked out." Marlene and Murray's eyes met. Monica and Madilynn looked at each other, confused. The front door was blown inwards, and three black-cloaked figures swarmed into the house. The wands of the family's Aurors were sitting on the coffee table, having been forgotten with Monica's news. They both lunged for their wands as hexes were cast about the room. Something orange caught Madilynn's shoulder, and Monica's scream was cut short in a flash of green. The coffee table had been knocked over in all the confusion, and another flash of green picked off Murray. Marlene forgot about her wand, turning to face the intruders. This was it. If she went for her wand, they'd just get her in the back. She was staring death in the face, and her heart was lodged in her throat. Praying to whoever was listening that her mother would stay in the kitchen, that they wouldn't know she was there, Marlene opened her mouth. That was always a bad idea. "Fuck you, and fuck your boss. He's going down, and nothing you can do will stop us!" She spat on the robes of the nearest Death Eater, who leveled their wand at her. All was green, and then all was black. |
