The church looked lovely. Everything was exactly as Elizabeth had wanted. Marlene had made sure of that. Everything had to be perfect on her best friend's big day. Just for today, it didn't matter that there was a war waging quietly all around them. All that mattered was that this day was perfect. "Do I look okay?" Elizabeth asked, looking at her reflection in the mirror for the umpteenth time. She fussed with her veil, also for the umpteenth time. Marlene laughed and walked over, smoothing down Elizabeth's veil. "You look très belle, ma chérie," Marlene assured her. She appraised her own reflection in the mirror. "Only for you would I wear a dress, you know," she said with a wry smile. Admittedly, the purple dress did look good on her. Not nearly so spectacular as Elizabeth looked in her white gown, of course. "Don't be silly, Marly. You'll wear a dress when you get married," Elizabeth commented with a smile. It took a lot of willpower for Marlene to not snort disbelievingly. "Actually, I was thinking that when I get married, I'll wear jeans," she replied with a grin. Elizabeth stuck her tongue out at Marlene. "That was really mature for your wedding day, Liz," Marlene teased. She rested her head on Liz's shoulder, looking at the two of them in the mirror. "Remember that time that our mums had just given us a bath, and we were all dressed up in nice, pretty clean clothes ... and then we went outside and got covered in mud? I thought our mums were going to kill us." "That was your fault, if I remember correctly," Elizabeth said with a grin. "My fault? You're the older one, you were supposed to know better!" Marlene feigned an insulted expression, before she cracked up. After a short moment, Elizabeth started laughing, too. "Mon dieu!" she cried happily. "We had such fun when we were young." "Hey, now, don't go all sappy on me. We'll still have fun, always. Just because you're getting married doesn't mean that we're not going to see each other anymore." Marlene turned and hugged Elizabeth, careful not to muss up her dress or veil. "Merlin, Marly, you're going to make me cry, and we'll have to redo my makeup!" Elizabeth said with a giggle, returning the hug. Out in the church, they could hear the musicians getting ready. There was a knock on the door, and then it opened. Elizabeth's uncle Lionel stood there. "It's time," he said as the girls disengaged from their hug. Marlene scooped Elizabeth's bouquet up and gave it to her friend, then helped adjust the veil one last time. "I told you that Kevin was better than Aiden," she said with a smile, kissing Elizabeth on the cheek. "Come on, let's go get you married." |
