Natalie had always been a quiet, obedient young child. Others marveled at how well-mannered she was, how she followed direction without question. It amused them how much she trailed after her older brother, like a little lost puppy. But then they would comment on what a good older brother he was, looking after his little sister and letting her follow him around. But on the eve of Nathaniel's departure for his first year at Hogwarts, Natalie was quite unlike herself. She was far clingier than usual, getting upset if Nathaniel was out of her sights for longer than a few minutes. Her mother chided her for acting like a baby, but Natalie just wanted to stay with her brother. That night, she slept in his room. When her whimpering woke him up, he held her until she calmed down. "Don't go, Nathaniel," she pleaded. "Stay here, please." Natalie didn't know what she would do without her brother. "Shhh," Nathaniel murmured into her dark hair. "Everything will be fine. We'll both be fine." Whether he was trying to comfort her or himself, neither could be sure. But they were about to be separated for the longest time that either had been without the other since Natalie had been born. Both wanted to believe that they would be fine, even though they both knew they wouldn't be. |
