Hugh took his lunch break from the studio, but instead of going to get food, he headed out into muggle London, straight to the same jewellery store he'd been visiting off and on for, god, months now. He was there frequently enough that the girl behind the counter (Jennifer) looked up when the bells on the door jingled as he walked in, and smiled and greeted him by name. "Hi Hugh, back to look at it again?" Hugh smiled crookedly, the door swinging shut behind him. "Yeah," he admitted. He beelined straight for the case it was in, and Jennifer walked around on the other side, opening the case and taking the ring out, setting it out on the counter in front of him. "You going to ever buy it, or just keep coming by to look at it?" Jennifer asked with a smile. Picking the ring up to hold it closer and look at it- for the thousandth time- Hugh sighed inwardly. Would he ever buy it? It was gorgeous, perfect. He could clearly see it shining on Mo's finger. He knew she would love it. It wasn't a question of money- he made enough on the show to easily afford it. It wasn't even a question of whether or not he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her- that was a no-brainer, he couldn't conceive of a future without her in it. And he knew that if he bought the ring and asked her to marry him, she would say yes. So it wasn't even fear of rejection. It was deeper than that, really. Simple, and yet complicated. He didn't deserve her. He absolutely loved her, he would be lost without her, but she deserved so much better than him. He looked down at the ring- the perfect ring- and was sure that he didn't deserve to buy it for her, didn't deserve for her to be his forever. His eyes dropped from the ring to the hemp-and-leather wristband on his right wrist. He was a felon, he had killed someone. It was an accident, of course, but that didn't change anything. He had taken a life, so he didn't deserve the happiness of having Mo forever. He was already being unbeliveably selfish, holding on to her like he did, but he just couldn't let her go. One day, she'd realise that she was too good for him, and then he'd have to let her go. The corners of his mouth turning down a bit, he gently returned the ring to its little cushion. "Maybe," he finally answered, though it felt like a lie. "But not today." Jennifer gave him a sad little smile. "The ring wants you to buy it. But it'll be here waiting for you until you're ready." She returned it to the case, locking it up. "Anything else I can do for you today, Hugh?" Hugh shook his head. "No- thank you, Jennifer. See you next time." Lifting his hand in a small wave, he turned and left the shop, the bell jingling as he opened the door. Back to the studio for the rest of the afternoon, then it would be home to get everything ready for Mo for tonight. It was Valentine's Day, after all. |
