The house was too quiet. Ollie was at practice, Bailey was off playing with her cousins. Everyone else was at work or off doing something. Sally sat on the counter in the bathroom, leaning back against the wall and trying to remind herself to breathe. Sixty seconds, that's what the box promised. Half the time it took the last time she'd done this. Sixty seconds, and she'd know for sure. The timer ticked away on the counter next to her. Sixty seconds weren't that long, but it felt like they were dragging on forever. She didn't know what she wanted the test to say. The little positive sign or the little negative sign. Tick. Tick. How long could sixty seconds last? Sally brought her trembling hands up to her face, rubbing at her eyes. She should have waited, until someone was home, until someone could have been here with her while she waited. Finally, the timer dinged. But Sally couldn't do it, she couldn't look at it. She needed help. So she grabbed it and her wand and apparated herself directly to St. Mungo's. She asked for Hannah Hopkins, and was told she was on her break. A Healer went to find Hannah while Sally shifted her weight nervously from foot to foot. Her hand shook from the effort to hold the test, surely it had to weigh a thousand pounds right now. When she saw Hannah coming her way, she ran up to her, clinging to her best friend's arm with her free hand. Tears coming to her eyes, she held out the test, and her voice came out in a whisper, "Please, I can't look at it myself." Hannah gingerly took the test from her and looked down at it, then pulled Sally into a hug. "Congratulations," she whispered. |
