The house was quiet and peaceful, which was in itself worth of note -- honestly, Sally couldn't remember the last time the house had been so quiet, between the boys and the girls and the kids and the various pets that all lived in their own homes on the land surrounding the house, though the walls, doors, and windows that set apart each family's home were only vague suggestions, everyone was always in and out of everyone else's homes all the time, and Dog, Wrath, Wrath's kittens, and all the other pets that had been acquired by various members of the large extended family had the freedom to roam wherever they pleased. But right now, the Wood house, at least, was nearly silent and completely peaceful. Though the house could never be so peaceful as the little girl who slept soundly in Sally's arms as she sat and slowly rocked back and forth in the rocking chair, gazing down at her daughter's face. Her daughter. Sally still couldn't believe that this little girl, barely a few days old, was here, perfectly healthy and with all her fingers and toes, her cute little nose and chubby little cheeks, her wispy dark hair. From the moment she'd realised that she was late, a panic had gripped her, and having it confirmed -- yes, she was pregnant -- only made her panic worse. Even as she passed the point at which she'd lost her first baby, even as the little baby bump started showing (and then growing progressively larger over the following months), even as she could feel the little life inside her, moving around and kicking and growing, she lived in a constant state of panic that something would happen. But Oliver was always there to calm her down, to get her to relax, to convince her that everything was fine. And she had Hannah there the whole time, too, gently assuring her from a medical standpoint that her pregnancy was perfectly healthy and going smoothly. And Bailey, of course, always wanting to feel the baby kicking and asking when "her baby" was going to be there. And now here she was, with the world's most adorable baby girl in her arms, peacefully sleeping while the world's happiest mommy gazed down at her. She knew that she should probably put Maggie down in the crib, maybe take advantage of the quiet to take a nap herself, but she wanted to just sit here, rocking her little baby girl, and soak in the glow of the happiest word in the world right now: mommy. |
