"Happy thirtieth birthday, Chipmunk." Caoimhe settled on the ground, carefully placing the bag of chocolate coins and bouquet of flowers at the base of the tombstone. It was a simple tombstone, just his name, birthdate, and deathdate, with "Beloved Son and Brother" engraved beneath. Three birthdays spent without him. It was still odd, knowing that he wouldn't be giving her a gift, promising that this time he hadn't nicked it, he'd paid for it honestly, even though she always knew that Doyle's idea of "honestly" wasn't the same as everyone else's. The memories brought tears to Caoimhe's eyes. She'd been doing so well, not crying nearly so much when thinking about the past. "Little Doyle is getting big. He's almost eight months old now. I bet he'll be walking in no time, then he'll just be running me and Sturgis ragged." She looked down at her lap. "I wish you could have met him, Chipmunk. But we'll be telling him all about his uncle Doyle, how brave and loyal you were, how great of a brother you were, how big your heart was." Wiping at her eyes, Caoimhe took a deep, ragged breath. "I love you, Chipmunk, and I miss you." |
