The wards around the house were still in place, check. The front door was still locked, check. Every time Marlene came home from work, it was the same routine, but there was comfort in the routine. Unlocking the door and letting herself into the house, she called out, "I'm home!" As she locked the door behind her, she was unnerved by the lack of a response. Wand at the ready, Marlene ventured into the kitchen. Empty. The sitting room was likewise empty. The clutter around the house wasn't any different than usual, but everything just felt ... off. Wrong. "Sirius, if this is a game, I'm not amused! Where the fuck are you?" she called out, worry and fear heavily colouring her voice. The wards had been up, she was positive of that. There were only a few people who could always get through those wards, and none of them would do anything to hurt Sirius. Unless they were under the Imperius. "Sirius!" Marlene was frantic now, taking the stairs two at a time, her wand clutched in her hand, ready to fire. But the upstairs was empty, too. Though Marlene tried to convince herself that everything was fine, that Sirius had just gone out, she couldn't convince the heavy feeling in the pit of her stomach. She went back downstairs and out the door to the backyard. And that was shen she saw him. The shape just outside of the wards around the house was clearly that of a shaggy black dog, and she knew exactly who that dog was. Marlene took off at a flat-out sprint toward the dog, Sirius. She sank to her knees next to him, just outside of the wards. Blood soaked into her robes, but she didn't care. "No ..." she breathed. He whimpered and tried to nudge her with his nose, but he was already too weak. "Sirius, hang on. Please." Through her terror and worry, Marlene clutched for a happy memory. Marrying Sirius -- even though at least half the people they knew where questioning their sanity for it -- was her happiest. She let that fill her, and she called up a patronus. "Come NOW, he's been attacked!" was the message she gave the patronus to carry to the other Order members. She gently pulled his head up on her lap, stroking his fur with hands that shook. "It'll be alright, everyone will be here soon. Alice or Morgan will heal you. You'll be okay. Just hang on, please." |
