Just about anyone else probably wouldn't drive across the street. They would just walk across the street, pick up their date, and then walk back across the street to get into the car. But Teddy had been raised to pick a girl up at her house, and the fact that the girl in question lived right across the street from him didn't change that. Teddy climbed into his car, pulled out of the driveway, and then pulled to a stop at the curb on the opposite side of the street. It took all of half a minute, if that. But it was the thought that counted, and Teddy was nervous enough already about taking Jessie out on a date. Flowers. You always brought a girl flowers. Teddy knew that much. It went along with picking the girl up. But even beyond that, he had wanted to get her flowers. Unsure of what kind she liked, though, he asked her cousin Jenny for advice. She had suggested tiger lilies, and while Teddy was wondering if it really was the right flower to get, he'd managed to find a bouquet of them for Jessie. So Teddy picked up the bouquet of tiger lilies, got out of the car, and walked up to Jessie's front door. Holding the flowers behind his back with one hand, he took a deep breath to calm himself, then knocked with his free hand. |
