Nick and Hilde woke early the next morning and ate a quick breakfast before heading out on the road to pick up the rest of Hilde's things and Odin. For the first time in months, Nick's sleep had been undisturbed by nightmares. Hilde's presence had always had a calming effect on him, it seemed nothing had changed.
Odin, Nick found out, was a very affectionate cat. He'd been hesitant at first upon seeing Nick but had quickly warmed with a bone rattling purr. That all changed as soon as he was crammed into his carrier. He went from affectionate and purring to a yowling beast that hissed with displeasure and gave an unsatisfied disdainful claw at his cage.
Nick felt bad for the little guy but they didn't want him roaming the car.
It'd taken about an hour to load up his jeep with the essentials Hilde had to have and about another fifteen minutes to get Odin into his carrier. They were on their way back to Nick's place, taking an out of the way route to avoid a roadblock of cars and trucks, when they passed Cabela's.
"Time to do some shopping," he said glancing at the room he had left in his jeep. Screw it. Whatever they couldn't fit, they could lash to the top of the jeep. It was still cool enough in the morning that Odin would be fine if he parked in the shade and the kept the windows rolled down. "We need to stock up and I want to check out what they've got in way of weapons."
