It had been a bad week for Severus Snape. A very, very bad week. There might have been a time in his life when killing someone, especially someone he hated terribly, might have given him a sense of pleasure. He wouldn’t be lying if he’d said he’d imagined killing Sirius Black on more than one occasion. In his imagination, it had felt almost like a relief. Closure. Justified satisfaction. Severus did not think that the lack of permanence had anything to do with the fact that he had not felt those things. All he’d felt was slight regret followed by a strange sense of hollowness. He had no real taste for the kind of violence he’d just doled out, had gotten no satisfaction from it even if he vehemently did not like Sirius and believed he’d deserved it. He had three days to reflect on it, three days to wonder if perhaps he, like Sirius had said, didn’t know enough of the situation. So once the Hell-Week ended and Sirius was back to being not-dead and off doing whatever thing it was he did while he was avoiding Snape -- well. He went looking for answers. There was more than one person here with knowledge of the future, but none he trusted quite so well as Neville Longbottom. The man clearly had history with him, unlikely good, but was willing to put it to the side and be fair when it was called for. Neville was often in the greenhouse, and it wasn’t hard to find him. If Snape was paler than usual, with darker rings under his eyes, he wasn’t going to be the one to bring it up. Instead, he found a spot in the dirt beside the other wizard and got to work. He’d find the words he needed soon enough. |
