It was strange that he felt more comfortable meditating in the graveyard than anywhere else on hotel grounds. Though he spent most of his time near the water as possible, sitting there among the headstones was his favorite spot. This early in the day, when the sun was still barely peeking over, there was a low chance of seeing anyone out. A low chance of being interrupted. He typically stayed out until the sun had fully risen and then went back inside to figure out breakfast. That time alone helped him gather his thoughts and reflect. His rash and reckless behavior had improved over the months but Ben still had a bit of that inner rebellious spirit left in him. He liked to live in the moment and sometimes, he had regrets. Of course, any time he started to doubt himself too much, Rey's voice would pop into the back of his mind; encouraging and uplifting. He was careful to never let those dark thoughts overwhelm him. Some mornings were ...fuller than others. Sometimes nightmares reminded him how easily he could slip back. On those mornings, he stayed out until he was ready. That morning happened to be one of those. He hadn't slept much that night. A dream about his father, about that moment on the bridge, had him almost running out of his and Finn's room just after midnight. He was out for hours, unable to fall asleep again. He wasn't sure what time it was when he stood back to head back into the hotel and slink back into bed but the sun was still making its way over horizon. As he started to walk, bags under his eyes, he heard a weird noise. Stopping, he cocked his head toward where the sound was coming from. It was hard to recognize. He wasn't sure what it was. All he could sense was that there was a momvement of some kind. Then the noise was gone. The more he tried to focus on it, the more he was convinced that it was just the wind that he'd heard. But as he started again toward the hotel, suddenly there was someone being dropped in front of him. He barely had time to react, catching her before she hit the ground. |
