Caleb woke with a gasp, somewhere on the edge of a cry. For the longest time, he didn't know where he was or what had happened. Then Caduceus stirred next to him and things slowly began to settle into place again. It was hard to pinpoint the last thing he remembered. Even with a mind such as his, the thoughts and memories battered up against each other in an attempt to sort themselves into some kind of order. It felt like a dream, but which part of it was the dream was hard to say. There were the last few weeks here in the hotel with Caduceus. And then there was Cognouza. He shifted a little and drew his knees up to his chest, raking his hands through his hair before pressing them to his face. It was just a lot. It was so much. And there was a whole empty chasm of time between meeting with Trent in the park and waking up in his own bed here. Had someone found him and brought him back? Had that weird magic of the hotel put him back where he belonged? His heart raced and his hands shook as he reached one over to settle against the soft fur of Caduceus' side. At least he was here. Caleb's mind was in such a state that he didn't even know what time it was. Then a feeling of cold dread settled across his shoulders. How long had he been gone? He hadn't told anyone where he was going when he left to meet Trent - not that anyone would care except Caduceus. But that one person, and his feelings, meant more than anything else in the world to Caleb. He felt a knot well up in his throat and his grip tightened on the sheets. He should have thought this through just a bit further. But it was done, now, and he still had weeks of new memories flooding his mind that he needed to sort through and put back in order. "Caduceus," he murmured, gently nudging his mate's hip. "I need-" he paused to draw in a sharp breath, the rest of the phrase trailing off into the ether. |
