The mark appeared outside his window just as the sky was growing dark. The glowing emerald skull with the serpent protruding from its mouth hung in the air with a haze of green smoke around it. It rose in the air, just visible across the park from where Theo was standing in his window. A threat. An invitation. It appeared he and Gilmore hadn't gone unnoticed the other day. He'd thought they'd been successful in avoiding being seen, but somehow he knew this Mark was for him. He wasn't sure how he knew it, but it made sense. If he'd been seen, then he knew that Rabastan, or his father--he wasn't sure who it was he had seen--would want to make sure that he knew he'd been seen. "You're an idiot, Nott," he whispered to himself, even as he grabbed a black cloak and made sure his phone was tucked into a secret pocket. He cast a disillusionment spell on himself, not wanting to be noticed as he made his way out of the hotel and into the park. He knew it would be smarter to find someone, ask them to come with him. He'd just fought a dragon with a group of people he was coming to like very much, but this wasn't their fight. And this was different from the dragon. This wasn't a threat to everyone. Just to him. He made his way out of the hotel and started towards the direction he'd seen the Dark Mark in the sky. His stomach was twisted with nerves, and he knew how stupid he was being but it was almost a compulsion to continue on. For whatever reason, he needed to prove to himself that he could face this part of his past even though he knew it didn't matter. Nothing that happened here at the hotel had any effect on his life back home, and back home this threat had already passed. What he was doing was just stupid and useless and yet he couldn't turn back. A course of action had been decided upon, and he'd see it through. At least there was a good chance he'd wake up at the hotel if he died, he thought. That seemed to be the prevailing theory on the net at least. It had apparently happened before. No consequences, he thought. Wasn't that what he'd decided about the hotel? There were literally no consequences to what happened here, so why not be brave and see what happened. A movement to his left caught his attention, and he looked over and saw another person keeping to the shadows. He'd let his disillusionment charm down as he left the hotel, as the people where he was going would be expecting him, and knew that the other person saw him too. "You should go back to the hotel. It's not safe out here," he said, though for all he knew this could be someone who wanted to kill him as easily as it could be someone from the hotel. |
