Tonight Ben had actually cooked. With Armitage's help, of course. After inviting the others to dinner, he'd needed the extra hand. And he'd gone to great lengths to make sure everything was perfect. Okay, the potatoes were a bit more crispy than he'd intended but it was his own fault for not paying closer attention. At least everything else turned out alright thanks to his boyfriend's more careful eye. Ben had even swiped a few bottles of red and white wine from the bar for them to enjoy. If he hadn't been so nervous about the evening's outcome, he might have had a glass or two himself while cooking. It had been a long time coming ...this night. This moment. Ben had been dreading it since he had first arrived at the hotel. Though he'd been disappointed at first that this Rey had not been his Rey, not yet, a part of him had been relieved. She was far out of her grandfather's reach here. And ignorance was bliss. It had been kinder to let her believe her parents had abandoned her than to know what her own family had been willing to murder his own child to get to her. Or clone offspring. Ben hadn't really stuck around Exegol to get the full history of that shifty looking lab he'd passed on the way to Palpatine's throne. Correction; tomb. Rey had seen to that. Even knowing who he was to her, she had done what even Ben hadn't been able to. Explaining her connection to the old Sith now would be like opening up an old wound. In time, that wound would heal but first, Ben knew it would hurt. A lot. Well. First, there would be dinner. He'd used one of the bigger tables for them and set it up in one of the back corners of the dining room. After bringing everything out and setting it on the table, he took his spot and let everyone dish and enjoy as much as they wanted. He tried to hide how anxious he was and shrugged off any nervous fidgeting as just an effect of the wine. Which he'd barely had a glass of throughout the whole meal. The food smelled amazing but everything tasted like ash in his mouth. He ate what was necessary for show but otherwise left everything up to the others to devour. Once all the food had been gobbled and smacked, Ben went to fetch the dessert. He'd managed a fruit pie, still hot from the oven. He served Rey first and then let the others fight over the rest. Taking his spot next to her, he waited a little longer as she enjoyed a few bites. Ben grinned, in spite of the painful nerves in his stomach. "What do you think?" |
