It had been a strange day and a stranger evening, but Jinn's presence on this particular floor at this particular time was nothing more than coincidence. He had not meant to creep up on Audrey, but she had slowed her steps and he had not noticed until he was behind her.
Perhaps his tread had been too quiet. In truth, he had been lost in thought, aware of Salim's closed door and wondering - when she had stopped and turned. And now, here they were.
"I am on this floor," he told Audrey, answering the question she hadn't asked rather than the one she had. The timing was unfortunate. He had availed himself an hour before, but the sense of satisfaction remained fleeting. He knew Audrey moderately well. She was sweet, in her own way, and oddly conscientious about bringing him coffee when they met in the cemetery. She did not complain of the cold, or the backbreaking work.
Jinn took a step toward her, gauging her reaction. "Do you wish to be alone?"
