It was becoming a little bit difficult, staying in a place that was so small. Certainly, there were interesting parts of it -- the nature of the hotel and the island were fluid in some regards and that interested Loki very much. Even so, not being able to come and go at her own leisure felt a little heavier than a burden.

Probably, she’d have to find a hobby of some kind soon, because the urge to do something was rising. And Odin only knew what would happen in a place rife with Avengers (and baby Avengers) when Loki decided to misbehave.

Probably nothing all that great. Though that could be fun too, really. Any kind of attention was good attention.

For now though, she was making the best of what was left of the vestiges of summer, taking in the sunlight that October offered by lounging directly on the end of the boat dock. It wasn't really warm, but cold temperatures meant next to nothing to her anyway.

Quiet contemplation only went so far though, and Loki shifted slightly at the approach of a stranger. Hopefully an entertaining one.

Well, it wasn’t exactly paradise, but it would do. For now.

Some beach was better than no beach, and naturally Killian would gravitate toward such a locale anyway, to the soft skies above and the sharp stones underfoot and brilliant blue waves with the white lace foam; when they crashed upon the shore it was an echo of a familiar drumbeat in his sea-loving heart, and the salty breeze blew the tension right from his bones.

Again, for now. He didn’t plan to make much of a home here at this mysterious island. This beach didn’t even have a name, did it?

No matter. The beach and the boat dock were pleasant enough, which was where he found himself right now - he wondered how far he could sail out before getting turned around and thought perhaps it was a mission worth undertaking. When he neared the docks, however, he assumed he wasn't the only one with that idea.

"Planning to set sail?" he inquired curiously as he approached.

Loki sat up a little more, turning around in order to get a better look at the approaching man. He was certainly interesting. In a good looking way, certainly, but that wasn't exactly what Loki was looking at.

"I'm afraid we're missing a boat for that," Loki responded, glancing away to look at the water for a beat. "But a raft might not be so hard to manage. If you're looking to hitch a ride, I do expect a contribution."

"I've built boats before - might be a fun project," Killian hummed, though a raft would be alright too - one made of bones, perhaps? The comment about hitching a ride earned a smoky and scalded chuckle, a rumble of noise. "What sort of contribution did you have in mind?"

He edged closer, settling on the dock itself - the wood looked new, even. It wasn't creaky or rotted, or stained with anything questionable - in fact the whole hotel appeared to be quite old (almost as old as him?) yet refurbished recently. Perhaps for the influx of guests.

However, the boat dock itself wasn't as interesting as the lady who lounged upon it - he could sense magic, a great deal of it, crackling and simmering; was it light or dark magic? That remained to be seen. "Killian Jones," he introduced himself. "Or Hook if you'd rather."

"Well, I've never been particularly good with a paddle. But you look like you could manage one just fine," Loki said, smiling thin and amused over the way Killian laughed, rough and a little dark but Loki could always appreciate someone with a sense of humor.

She made room -- not that she took up much space, and not that Killian much did either, but there was no reason to be greedy. It gave Loki a better vantage for observing this new person. He oozed darkness, but it wasn't any kind of natural magic.

"Isn't it what you'd rather?" Loki asked mildly, because if nothing else, names had power. "Loki Laufeyson," she went on, introducing herself and stretching a hand out for a proper greeting.

Not many people asked him what he preferred, in terms of moniker - for awhile he'd been sensitive, shall we say, about his lack of hand; he'd killed an unfortunate fellow named Barnaby, in front of his wife even, for daring to refer to him as 'One-Handed Jones.' Killian still wore Barnaby's ring on his good hand, a shiny prize and a story to tell, a reminder to not fuck with him. These days, he was more used to the moniker of Captain Hook - accepted it for what it was, and learned to do most everything with only one hand anyway.

But still, it was nice to be asked. "Killian suits just fine, then," he flashed a white-toothed smile, shaking the woman's hand when she offered it. "A pleasure, Loki. Are you a sorceress?"

Perhaps a bold question to ask, but he was quite curious and no doubt she could sense a similar magical kindred spirit in him too - despite how he didn't usually wear the scent of the arcane.

"Killian," Loki repeated, and it sat easy on her tongue, the last syllable was almost a smile. It was obvious to see why some might call him Hook, considering the lack of a second hand. But his handshake was solid enough on his other one, the rings very pretty.

The question was a little bold, but not so much that it was a surprise. Magic was always pretty good at feeling out other magic -- particularly when neither of them were trying to hide it. Although, Loki had a bit of a suspicion that Killian couldn't cover his up even if he wanted to.

"A sorceress?" she repeated, tapping at her chin thoughtfully before offering up something of a shrug. "Yes, you could say that. Something like that." It, like Loki, wasn't not so easily defined in just one word. "And what are you?"

"Something like that," Killian agreed, in reference to himself. Well, he wasn't a sorceress, but he could wear any face and any form thanks to the magic flowing through his veins so he supposed it was whatever suited him at the time. "Wizard? Warlock?"

Probably it was a matter of he not being very easily defined either - it was all a mess, and a cyclical one at that. It just kept going and going; no wonder the main symbol on the Dark One's vault was an Ouroboros, the symbol that circled all the other ones; the curse constantly re-created itself, by possessing another person. He watched the water ripple, and the breeze was soothing, comforting, placing its kisses on his cheeks - now he really wanted to take a boat out, listening to the lullaby of the sea. It was one of the few things he understood. "Whatever it is when something is more trouble than it's worth?" he offered up.

"Sometimes there isn't a proper word," Loki agreed, looking out at the water as well, although she wasn't really paying as much mind to it as he seemed to be. But then, Loki had never been a pirate. Sailing wasn't out of the question, but she had no true affinity for it like some others might, even if there was something keen about having wind in her hair. The freedom it offered was something to long for these days, although there were usually easier ways to travel, and Loki could slip through shadows on a whim, what good was a ship normally?

"I tend to like trouble," Loki offered with a smile. "Do you mean yourself or your magic? How did you come by it, if you don't mind my asking?" Some magic was just natural. You were born with it, an innate thing that you learned to master over time. Other kinds, granted or taken.

Liked trouble, did she? Well, that was an interesting little tidbit to learn. "Both," Killian confirmed with a crooked, wry little smile, because after so long at being a scoundrel, a dashing rapscallion, he liked to think that he fell under the umbrella of 'trouble.' And he was damn proud of it too.

As for how he came by his magic, that was a whole other story. One he thought quite a bit about, pondering his predicament, not sleeping. He'd wander the halls of the hotel, floorboards creaking loudly underneath his feet; the hue of the wood always gave him a pang and reminded him of what it'd be like to walk on a wooden deck rolling beneath him. He missed that quite a bit. "I was cursed," he stated simply, his attention turning back to his dock companion, gaze averted from the water - she was a pretty sight to lay eyes upon. "Brought back back from the brink of death and infused with immortality. With dark magic." It kept him both energized and alive, though at some point his sanity would be hanging by a thread.

"I presume you were born with yours."

Oh yes, Killian looked a bit like trouble, didn't he? That wasn't all he looked like, mind. Loki wasn't blind and Killian pulled off debonaire with a true devil-may-care attitude very well. Loki appreciated the aesthetic. Also the leather.

Loki shifted, until she was sitting on her knees, faced Killian, hands planted on either side in front of herself so that she was leaning forward just a little to look at, or perhaps through, Killian closely. "I was born with mine," she agreed, squinting slightly, bright eyes unnaturally green, "But I cultivated it to be what it is today. I thought it looked unnatural. Curses can be such ugly things." He wore it well, for what it was. But probably not forever.

Her eyes were so green they looked radioactive, and Killian was intrigued - intrigued by the magic and the cultivation of that magic. The lady was perhaps older than she looked? "There's only meant to be one Dark One," he said, and that was probably why it looked unnatural - among other reasons.

"One person under the curse at a time, I mean," he clarified. "But the woman who did this to me - she went against all laws of magic, essentially." Not to mention she betrayed Killian's trust, defied his wishes - it was like keeping someone on life support after they expressed wishes to pull the plug. He couldn't picture ever forgiving Emma for that; she'd only been thinking of herself, despite her claims otherwise - that she was doing it for them.

What a load of bullshit.

"The Dark One," Loki repeated, looking nothing but amused over it. "That's a very dramatic title. What does it entail?" Loki sort of loved dramatics in her own right though, had amassed quite a few titles for herself that probably sounded laughable to others.

"Before the woman," she started, not leaning back, because personal space apparently meant nothing when Loki was the one invading it. "You knew the laws of magic, but didn't have it yourself?" He was clearly bitter about the woman, but that was an age old story. Loki knew it well. She knew a lot of stories well. She'd still end up asking eventually, though.

Everything was either 'Light' or 'Dark,' especially in Misthaven, and Killian was quite over it as the youth said - even the Dark Ones that lived as the little voices in his head ultimately wanted to do away with light magic, but to him, magic was neither light nor dark. Didn't intent matter? Though, certainly, considering he was a host for Darkness - of course that was how he got his power.

"It entails a lot of magic," he said, fidgeting slightly to find a more comfortable sitting position on the docks. He didn't mind Loki's closeness though - not many had been close to him lately. Those shadows lurked in his peripherals - he could see Nimue's eyes flicker in that watchful, reptilian way. "Being a host for, literally, Darkness. Looks kind of shadowy, like tendrils of black. It's within me, giving me power and immortality but also...eating away at the important parts, I suppose? If one believes a heart to be important."

He wasn't sure how he felt about it these days. "And no, I didn't possess magic before this." His hook had been enchanted to be able to take a heart, and he had aged spectacularly well thanks to Neverland and various other curses - but he didn't cast spells.

The shadows were a little on the obvious side, but Loki was willing to reckon that she'd seen worse. Hel, at one time or another she'd been worse, a special dark curse of her own known as old age and bitterness. King Loki wasn't a part of herself she missed.

"I suppose there's something to be said for having heart. It's all just a metaphor for having a sense of self and maybe some morality. Once that's gone, it's the Darkness living no matter how much immortality was offered up." It was something of a drag, even for those who might not have cared much for being kind-hearted in the first place.

"Oh, so it's new and exciting still, even with the downsides," Loki noted. "That must make it more difficult."

Aye, new and exciting - Killian had to admit that having magic literally crackling at his fingertips was indeed a heady thrill; he could do so many things with it, and it was easier and easier to understand why Rumplefucker became so addicted to it all. How he was corrupted, how he gave up his family to keep that power - Killian was now a man with nothing to lose, which made him even more dangerous. Or more susceptible to giving in.

"Maybe some morality," he repeated, with a smirk that touched the nearly-feverish brightness of his eyes. "But yes, that's the idea - everything else is gone, save for the Darkness. Part of me doesn't even care, if that's what happens. I haven't got anyone here to be strong for, you know what I mean?"

And he didn't usually chatter this much either, but - he'd been holding it in for awhile and it was poisoning him. Bloody mad to think that the only moment of peace he'd gotten since arriving here was when he was lying next to some curly-haired mortal who actually knew how to work his mobile phone, humming sea shanties.

Loki supposed if there was anything worth being addicted to, it was power. Power was the sort of thing that unlocked so many avenues that the quest to have more of it always seemed an important, noble one. Money. Status. Land. Respect. They all came with it, and they were all fairly important.

She'd been content with her high rise in New York recently, but only because Loki knew it wouldn't be hard to have more if she felt so inclined. Gods took what they wanted, after all, and Loki had always been good at that.

"Some," Loki repeated right back with a smile, a little crooked, like she was welcoming in some trouble. "But not a lot. Everything in moderation, Killian." She leaned back then, thoughtful. "Most of the things I do, I do for myself. Power is important but only if I'm around to reap the benefits."

"Well, now that I can understand - looking out for number one," Killian snorted a laugh. "Did that for, oh, a good hundred years or so." Probably more. His crew was like family, sure, but then they'd all perished in Neverland, for the most part (save for Smee - that fucker was like a cockroach, he just never gave up, gave in, or died). He'd been alone after that, chasing fruitless revenge.

Then he met Emma when she accidentally fell into the Enchanted Forest, giants and beanstalks followed, and Killian stalked his crocodile to New York - things happened very quickly after that. It felt as if they'd never stopped, and no one got any chance to process any of their trauma at all. "Reaping the benefits doesn't seem like fun if you're not around to enjoy what you've built, no. Is that what you seek here? Power?"

"A hundred years?" Loki rose an eyebrow, but didn't look overly surprised over that information. Time worked in strange ways in a lot of realms. "Is that all? You can't have even gotten bored of it yet."

But that probably wasn't true, so much as a challenge and a lead for more information. Loki liked knowing things, especially stories.

"But me?" She asked, glancing away for a moment, brushing hair behind her ear. "I haven't decided what I'm after here, yet. Why? Are you offering?"

Ah, so the lady was older than she looked - or at least, Killian assumed so with the is that all inquiry. Still, he supposed maybe she wasn't, it was just a red herring - he was interested in knowing more, however. "I wasn't really bored of it, no," he chuckled ruefully. "But I attempted to be better about it, for the sake of someone else. Same woman who did this to me."

It really was a tale as old as time, wasn't it? Love gone wrong? Made him wonder why he even bothered in the first place. Alas.

"Maybe I'm offering - I suppose we'll see. For now, I ought to get back inside. Too much of gazing longingly at the water might mean I jump into it." Which wouldn't be a bad thing, necessarily - but a lot had been brought to the surface during this conversation and he wanted to think about the direction.

Even if the voices in his head, the actual devils on his shoulder, protested heartily.

Of course. It was always someone else, wasn't it? Love was a mess and no one seemed to be fully immune. Loki could almost see this man, with his sharp smile and leather going soft for someone. It probably wouldn't be a bad look. Then again, he was terribly attractive so she doubted anything would be much of a bad look on him.

"Well," she said, standing in one smooth motion and looking as nonchalant as anything. "Think on it. You know where to find me." Which wasn't necessarily true, but this Hotel wasn't a very big place in the grand scheme and Loki wasn't really making any effort to not be found, so. It wouldn't be much of a scavenger hunt.
