Winnie was not panicking. Winnie didn’t panic. She calmly assessed and reacted to difficult situations before they could get out of hand. She most certainly didn’t panic.
But she only had six chicks.
Where was Rocky?
She had very calmly put the other chicks in their little box, counted them, recounted. Only six. There were only six chicks. She only had six chicks. She recounted again. We went over all of their names. Rocky was most certainly not there. In a very frantic, not panicking at all fashion, she searched the rest of the room. Under everything, over everything. Everything smelled like chicken or chicken-related things. She looked under every blanket, pillow, everything. She searched the bathroom.
She stopped, she calmed herself, she sat perfectly still and listened. All she could hear were the chicks in the box. She could not hear Rocky. There was no Rocky anywhere.
Winnie’s eyes grew very wide as realization dawned on her, and she very slowly turned her head toward the door out of her apartment. The catflap. The damned catflap! She hurried toward it, sticking her head out through the flap and looking up and down the hallway. Did it smell like chicken out here?
Dear god. It did.
