Ana had an interview at Chapter One at noon. That meant she was up, showered, dressed, and out the door by nine thirty. That was her own special brand of social anxiety. If she wasn't early, she was late, and being late made her conspicuous. She hated that; she hated feeling eyes on her. One would think Ana would be used to attention. She was nearly six feet tall. She drew attention without trying to.
She drove into town, and found a parking spot outside of The Daily Grind, and inwardly cringed at the time on the digital clock. Five minutes early, ten, maybe, but to walk into the bookstore now, two hours before she was due, would make her look very desperate and very awkward. Ana turned her eyes towards the storefront before her. It wasn't completely busy, but there were quite a few people at the tables in the coffee shop. She had a book. She hadn't had coffee yet. She took a deep breath, grabbed her purse, and exited her car. She could do this without her brother. She managed at home well enough.
Granted, she went to the same coffee shop in Detroit every day. She knew the people who worked there by name. It was comfortable and familiar. This was new and slightly terrifying. It's just coffee, she told herself. You can do coffee. You have a book. Just buy the coffee, take a seat, and read. After another slow, deep breath, Ana pushed into the shop and made her way to the cash register. There were two people in front of her, so she had time to glance at the menu and make sure what she always ordered was offered at the Grind. It was.
When it was her turn, she had a smile pasted on her face and made herself meet the barista's eyes like an unawkard human. "May I please have a sixteen ounce mocha and a chocolate croissant for here?"
