Who: Bart Finn and Tally Parrino
What: Bart checks on Tally
When: morning, shortly after the end of the simulation
Where: Unit D
Rating: PG-13 for talk of murder, and probably PTSD
Status: Closed/Incomplete.
Bart had blown the training mission. Since he escaped, he'd lost control of his ability, and spoke more honestly than he had in his entire life, but he'd also been infused with an unnatural calm. An almost optimistic calm, even. Sure, Tally still managed to trigger him, but even that was sparse in comparison to what it could be. And during that mock raid, he'd lost that sense of calm. He'd been terrified. But he'd also felt an anger rise in him that he hadn't felt in months.
As the simulation went on, Bart lost control. He'd gotten so angry, he'd wanted to kill someone. Which was a dirty feeling. Something he had no control over and was supposed to have moved past. He wasn't a killer, and only killers felt that strong a desire to kill people. But the worst part was that he didn't finish the simulation, he failed it. And 'died'. He got knocked out and when he woke up again, after the simulation had ended - mostly unharmed - but that had triggered him all over again. Because for the brief moments it took his brain to catch up - Bart had been convinced he was back there. That Crestwood had really been an hallucination and it had ended. And that taught him just as much as the simulation had, because he found how easily his mind braced itself and began to shut down at such a reality.
And when he'd gotten over that, he immediately thought of Tally. He'd been triggered, but he knew it had to be just as bad as her. It couldn't be helped - it was a clever, and probably necessary training exercise, but that rescue Bart went through was still so fresh in his mind. A mere three months ago, he'd killed someone, forced to by the government. He hadn't even mentally left that camp yet. And he knew Tally was stuck back there too.
So once he'd been cleared, and the mission was officially over, he went straight to his unit, and straight to Tally's room. He knocked on her door but barely paused to open it. "Grim," he half asked, half whispered. The room was empty, but instead of investigating the rest of the unit, he went to Tally's bed and went to his knees. "Grim," he repeated. "Are - are you under - It's Bambi."
