Nov. 9th, 2007 @ 06:45 pm November Prompt 2
Personal ritual. We all have them, little superstitions that we all follow. What’s yours?

Okay, this is really embarrassing. Not super embarrassing, just really. The first night of my tour with Michelle Branch I had horrible stage fright. The kind where you wonder if you can die from it, or wondering if death would be better than the giants that were stomping around in your stomach. Oh no, I didn't have butterflies trust me, I had big ol' giants stomping around.

Anyway, I'm trying not to freak out that there will be hundreds of people watching me make an ass of myself. The only thing that I could think of was the songs to Les Miserable. Don't ask me why that popped into my head, it's not like I sing show tunes all the time. Maybe my subconscious was telling me that I was about to get massacred like the student revolt in Paris. It doesn't really matter why my brain picked those songs to calm me down, what really matters was that it worked.

I sat under the makeup table, singing softly to myself and by the time they came to get me to open for the Wreckers, my nerves were calmer. They were never calm that night, that would be an impossibility, but they were calm enough to let me sing without fainting on stage.

Since it worked so well that night, I tried it again the next night and the next. I have no idea when it became a ritual, but there is no way I will sing in front of people without singing at least one song from Les Miserable.

Nov. 9th, 2007 @ 09:05 pm Prompt 3 - Serendipity

I never believed in Serendipity, luck, or whatever you want to call it. I only believed in myself, and only romantics or people with their head up their ass think that luck exists.

That was my philosophy in life, until I literally fell into a treasure. Was it Serendipity, or was it Fate, or are they the same? Who knows? All I know is that thanks to rotten wood, I fell through a roof and landed in an attic of an abandoned home. On the upside, a small wooden chair broke my fall and the guards never did find where I went.

After I dusted myself off and waited for the pain that reverberated along my spine to die down, I noticed a shimmering coming through a small hole in the wall. Amazing what you can see when you can’t straighten up for a bit. The glistening was a mirrored surface on top of a hand carved wood and ivory box. The pain in my back was instantly forgotten as I made the hole larger so I could get a better look at what was hidden.

The ivory alone was worth enough money to feed me for a month if I could figure out how to clean the box up. When you live on the streets, gaining a reputation as a thief, you learn that almost anything is worth money. The old lock on the box took me about fifteen seconds to pick and my breath caught when I opened the box. Frankly, I expected some stupid letters, or a journal, but definitely family heirlooms forgotten. I sure as shit didn’t expect to see gold bullion. Three hundred fifty dollars an ounce and there was at least twenty gold coins in the box.

I may have always believed that suckers were the only ones that believed in luck, but seven thousands dollars worth of gold coin changed my mind. Was it Serendipity, or was it Fate? Either way, I made it work for me and that’s still my philosophy. Take whatever Fate, Luck, Serendipity gives you, and make it an advantage.
