Dec. 22nd, 2007 @ 11:39 am December Prompt 5 - Map and Compass

Map and Compass

Gwen stared down at the map, her mind going over everything that she’d read about the Key of Gondolar. It would have been nice if the mystics from the Qraqtoria dimension had their portal entrance marked with a big neon Las Vegas sign. She tucked a strand of unruly curly hair behind her ear and muffled a growl of frustration. The Amazon rain forest covered the area on the map and she knew that there were probably hundreds of mounds that the Key could be in.

“If this is some damn wild goose chase and the Key really is a myth, I’m taking all the Aztec items I find along the way.”

Nicole laughed at her boss and handed Gwen a glass of wine. “You would do that whether it’s a myth or not.”

Gwen’s lips twitched as she sipped the liquid. “True, but I wouldn’t take as many if I knew I’d find the Key. It’s going to net a lot of money on the black market.” She turned to Nicole with a wide smile, “I’m hoping for a bidding war.”

Her gaze turned back toward the map and placed her finger next to where the small compass lay. “That’s as good a place as any to start the search. The coordinates match the journal entries on the Watcher Diary.” After months, Gwen had finally realized that if you wrote down the month and date of each entry that mentioned a key, it was longitude and latitude.

She raised her crystal wine goblet, clicking the rim against Nicole. “Here’s to a very profitable adventure.”

Nov. 9th, 2007 @ 09:05 pm Prompt 3 - Serendipity

I never believed in Serendipity, luck, or whatever you want to call it. I only believed in myself, and only romantics or people with their head up their ass think that luck exists.

That was my philosophy in life, until I literally fell into a treasure. Was it Serendipity, or was it Fate, or are they the same? Who knows? All I know is that thanks to rotten wood, I fell through a roof and landed in an attic of an abandoned home. On the upside, a small wooden chair broke my fall and the guards never did find where I went.

After I dusted myself off and waited for the pain that reverberated along my spine to die down, I noticed a shimmering coming through a small hole in the wall. Amazing what you can see when you can’t straighten up for a bit. The glistening was a mirrored surface on top of a hand carved wood and ivory box. The pain in my back was instantly forgotten as I made the hole larger so I could get a better look at what was hidden.

The ivory alone was worth enough money to feed me for a month if I could figure out how to clean the box up. When you live on the streets, gaining a reputation as a thief, you learn that almost anything is worth money. The old lock on the box took me about fifteen seconds to pick and my breath caught when I opened the box. Frankly, I expected some stupid letters, or a journal, but definitely family heirlooms forgotten. I sure as shit didn’t expect to see gold bullion. Three hundred fifty dollars an ounce and there was at least twenty gold coins in the box.

I may have always believed that suckers were the only ones that believed in luck, but seven thousands dollars worth of gold coin changed my mind. Was it Serendipity, or was it Fate? Either way, I made it work for me and that’s still my philosophy. Take whatever Fate, Luck, Serendipity gives you, and make it an advantage.

Oct. 17th, 2007 @ 07:06 am October Prompt 4 - Dinner Party

The thief inside Gwen twitched when she was at a charity function. All the jewelry and objects just sitting around, security lax and people's attention elsewhere. It had been one of her favorite targets, and the reason she'd chosen a party atmosphere to grab L.I.S.A. There were always so many distractions to take advantage of, but she wasn't working tonight. Tonight was to honor Gunn, or at least in her mind honor Gunn. She'd seen a flyer to help a teenage recreation facility in Gunn's old neighborhood, and the name Anne.

Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time. - Thomas Merton

For the first and only time in Gwen Raiden’s life, she fell in love. Only it wasn’t with a flesh and blood person, or someone that could cause her pain. Gwen fell in love with art and expression.

The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases. - Carl Jung

Gwen looked at her reflection in the building's mirrored surface and grimaced. She knew it was part of the job, part of the illusion, but that didn't mean she had to like it.

Jul. 28th, 2007 @ 10:29 am July Prompt - Graffiti

Gwen's lips curled into grin as she watched three teenagers finish up their street art, spray paint in each hand. It was one of the first things that she'd fallen in love with when she came to Los Angeles. All the graffiti that was left on the walls. The beautiful art work even if it was urban expression.
