Who: Walden and Katharina. With a cameo from Remus.
What: Walden is going to propose to Katharina.
When: 3 October 1978
Where: That's a surprise.
Why: Cause they're in looooove.
Rating: It will probably get dirty, as it does with most of my characters. I'd like to say that it's not at all a reflection on me. But it totally is.
Walden had been working on this proposal for nearly nine months. To be fair, the first couple of months all he did was think about things. But it was active thinking. Thinking that took up a great deal of his time. At that point he was already working two jobs in preparation, not that he was ready to admit that to himself. Thinking soon made way for doing, shopping for a ring, pricing houses and the like, which brought on a sustained state of near panic as Katharina's school year passed so quickly by. But there came a glorious moment when Katharina made a comment about her parents being so thrilled, if she was ever married off, that they would willing contribute, give even, to things that Walden thought he was going to have to solely provide. Suddenly he could concentrate on asking her to marry him and not their entire future. And he actually became excited. Until how to propose began to worry him. He had decided on a nice, quiet, romantic dinner. Simple, understated, easy. Then he spoke with Rodolphus, who had planned something romantic and so specifically tuned to whom he was proposing, it horrified Walden that his idea was so generic.
As far as Katharina went, she was no Bellatrix. Bitchy as she could be, she didn't expect things, didn't seem to think she deserved things. And always seemed surprised when she got them. Like love, for instance. So, doing something for her should have been much more simple than it proved itself to be. But finally Walden landed on an idea that he was happy with. One that didn't feel like too much or too little. Now he was just ready to get it over with.
Sitting in the living room of the flat he shared with Armand, not that Armand was ever there, waiting on Katharina to finish getting ready, Walden noticed that the headache he awoke with was finally, blissfully gone. Due to some over-serving he did last night, they were already later leaving than he had planned . Last night at the pub slipped into this morning at the pub, and it was well daylight by the time they stumbled home. And, consequently, no one was moving very fast today.
He pulled the small black jewelry box out of his pocket and opened it, looked for several minutes at the ring he had chosen, then snapped the box closed and returned it to his pocket. This was a habit he had gotten into ever since picking up the ring. At least once a day, but usually more like three or four times a day, he took the ring out, looked at it very hard, then put it away. It was as if he was afraid it was going to change, or he was worried about finding it suddenly, somehow substandard. Thankfully, he always found the ring just as he had left it, and he actually liked it a little more each time. But he wanted Katharina to love it.
"Katharina!!!" Walden yelled at the ceiling. Their room was just above where he was sitting and that was far easier than getting up, "What's the hold up?!"
