The journey from the heady oblivion of sleep to the slap of life that is wakefulness is a difficult one at the best of times, but there are certain sounds, sights, smells and feelings that are unpleasant to wake up to. Screaming, for example, or being soused in cold water. For most people, the smell of cooking breakfast would be a pleasant awakening, but not so for James Potter. When he woke up to the scent of toast, his immediate response was one of panic. Cooking was not something that went terribly well in the Potter household. It was replaced by a sort of relief as James realised that Harry must have come over, which was in turn followed by a reoccurence of the horror as he realised that today was his wedding anniversary, and so the likelihood of Harry coming round to cook breakfast was slim. Lily. Lily must be cooking.
James sat up straight in bed, eyes still bleary and hair an even bigger mess than usual. He groped on the bedside table for his glasses, put them on and began looking around for his slippers. Slippers located and also put on, he dashed down the stairs, almost tripping over his own over-long pyjama bottoms. True to his conjecture, Lily was in the kitchen, apparently attempting some sort of optimistic anniversary breakfast for them both.
"Oh darling," James said enthusiastically, walking in and giving his wife a kiss. "How thoughtful! You really shouldn't have. You should be taking it easy."
And that included taking it easy on their stomachs.
