"Thank you, Mabel, but I swear that I don't have a terminally ill disease," Cecily was saying as she bundled into her coat and tried to make a hasty break for the door while not appearing as if she was doing so. "I had...mycoplasma...and I just needed to take some time off to get it out of my system until I was no longer contagious." That she had been off work for a week or so until Altair had relieved of her mistletoe naturally went unsaid.
"Oh, but this would haven't happened if you had met a nice man," Mabel fretted, taking her frustrations out on a table with a robust swipe of her cloth. Mabel was the proprietor of Over The Teacups, the tearoom where Cecily worked, and therefore her boss. A well-meaning enough sort, she was prone to fussing over her young employee's love life - or lack thereof. "If only you had been here when that doctor was around...nice young man...would have fixed you right up."
Such was Cecily's desperation that for not the last time, she pondered what the matronly old Muggle's reaction would be if she told her that she was a lesbian. Aloud she said, "Thanks, Mabel, but I'm alright. Really. I have my friends and my painting and a lot of things to do in my spare time. And I really better get going. I'm meeting my sister for tea."
That wasn't precisely a lie. Cecily was indeed meeting Lucy for the evening meal, but not until the next day. Feeling slightly guilty at taking liberties with the truth, she wrapped her scarf tighter around her neck and took a deep breath as she stepped outside, preparing to relax for the first time all day.
At the sight of the figure rounding the corner, she let out a muffled squeak and ducked into the nearest doorway. What on earth was he doing here, and no, she didn't want to talk to him, he was rude and crass...
