She'd gone through more than half the bottle of whiskey and scrubbed herself in the shower until the hot water charms had given out, and still she couldn't get clean. It was hard to warm up, too, and she'd sat on her bed, wrapped up in the blankets, her bathrobe over her nightshirt, just trying to get warm.
The house seemed empty and alone, and she'd thought Dennis would come. She'd thought maybe, this once, he wouldn't dissappoint her. And maybe this was what she'd needed to really realize they were through, that whatever she'd secretly wanted from him, held out hope for, was gone, maybe even as a friend. Kimb had been sweet, and she felt horrible for shutting her out, but she was tied into everything that happened, the shame, the horrible feeling inside her.
And so it was she came down and waited by the door for Theodore. She wasn't sure why, but the minute he'd asked her if she had been hurt, a damn had burst and she hadn't been able to stop crying. She hadn't cried since she'd gotten up off the floor of the archives room, and now she couldn't stop.
Not even now, when she opened the door, and it was ironic, because just a week ago, they'd been opening this door for an entirely different reason.
