Who: Cam and Alex
What: Playing Paragon's Epoch
Where: Otherworld
When: Late Afternoon

Cam wasn't entirely sure what it was about Paragon's Epoch that drew him to it. Honestly, when he'd walked into Otherworld that morning he'd done it more as a gag, a waste of time, than to actually play anything. This way he could say he'd tried it if anyone asked, completely confident in the fact that video games were mostly for children and deadbeats who didn't have anything better going on in their lives. Hours later, strutting around in his female felid assassin (the male was equally pretty, but didn't walk with the same swag), he figured that logic was still mostly true, he just hadn't been aware of how much he'd fit into both of those categories. He'd gotten a pitiful excuse for a nap in earlier, and mostly intended to get one once they'd finished, before work began once more. Maybe. Probably. The game made him feel like a new, different person, and an old, familiar one at the same time. It called to his childhood, to the fun, lighthearted part of him he'd mostly forgotten.

He'd also forgotten what an absolute fucker he'd been back then.

"Stop stealing my fucking kills, retard!" The voice screamed at him again as Cam snickered and ran around Alex's lovely elven archer. The dragonling warrior played by some young voice with the name SUPAKILLA stomped around in a circle, as if hunting for the loot the party's newest kill might have dropped. The kid was mostly leeching experience off of them as they worked on getting to the next level. Fifteen minutes of that told Cam that, dammit, he as going to get something from all that work.

"I'm not doing anything, puppypie." Cam replied dryly, shaking his head within the confines of the dark lounger even as his eyes saw nothing but the bright, colorful world around him. A second later, he used his Blink skill to teleport behind the next bear just as its health was nearly depleted, sinking both curved daggers into the brown, fuzzy form before it collapsed onto the ground.

"Knock it off, dickhole!" The voice came again, and it took all of Cam's self control not to snort with laughter.

"Aaaaaaw, sorry sweetie. I didn't see you there. Shouldn't you be in school?" Cam did his best to shove the sound of an innocent pout into that statement, but it failed toward the end. SUPAKILLA caught this, and an indignant grunt echoed through the speakers.

"I'm twenty, you dick." The kid replied, smashing his two-handed sword into the bear monotonously. No skills, no special attacks. Smash smash amash.

Cam couldn't help but snort at that. He opened his menu and switched his new dagger to his dominant hand, then returned again. "Oh, honey, no. No you're really not."

"Yes, I am."

"Okay, kiddo, what year were you born?" Cam challenged, and before the kid could to the math to reply, another bear was downed by an arrow. At least this time it hadn't been him. That didn't seem to matter though.

"You're a cocksucker!!" The statement was practically screamed just before [SUPAKILLA has left the party] flashed before his eyes.

There was a second of silence before Cam chirped lightly. "Well, he called me out on that one. Gotta hand it to him." He brushed the whole incident off a few seconds later, his voice taking on a personable tone once more as he engaged in combat with the next bear. "Well, I can save up ten thousand gold for a basic clan, or we can save up to one hundred thou and get the luxurious, fabulous, deluxe clan. That's a twenty-five-kay discount if we go the direct route instead of getting the basic poor-as-fuck version and upgrading later. Preferences, peach?"

Honestly, they might as well have cost a million gold each for all the good it did either of them. At level eleven, despite being so close to twelve that it hurt, he had less than two hundred gold. Alex, who'd started after him, was likely carrying far less. Still, it didn't hurt to dream. "The deluxe clan castle is twice as big, and allows us to have fifty members. We can also customize it-ooo we can build a fountain."

It wasn't as though pretending to be someone else was a strange concept to Alex, and a tough one to deal with these days. On the surface, therefore, these immersive video games should feel tired and unappealing to Alex, but deep down they felt the exact opposite. It was harmless, being someone else under these circumstances. It was fun, too. And she was finally tall as an elf.

Playing with Cam brought a layer of mischief into the proceedings that made the entire thing even more fun. His felid assassin seemed to cheer her on every time she saw what could be a beautiful shot from an unlikely position and took it, accidentally - at first - stealing the kill of a kid who was playing with them at the time. The insults fazed her none, and Alex simply chuckled. "Oh that's not very nice now." She commented between laughs. Cam seemed intent on doing the same thing she was doing, but while Alex did it mostly because tough ranged kills made her feel good, Cam was probably doing it, at this stage, to anger the kid. And it was working.

The kid - twenty-year-old though he said he was - had as much skill and grace as an actual bear with a sword. While they argued over the kid's actual age, a poisoned arrow flew past the kid straight into the bear's head. Critical hit, instant death. "Ooh, damn!" Alex exclaimed, just before one of them was called a cocksucker - probably Cam - and the illustrious user by the name of SUPAKILLA quit the party in a fit of rage, making Alex chuckle again. She laughed louder when Cam commented on the fact that the kid hadn't exactly been wrong.

While they fought more bears, grinding and grinding for what little gold the beasts carried and what little worth in gold their loot also carried, Alex listened to Cam list the perks of either clan module. "I mean, if there's a discount we should go direct, right?" It seemed sensible, though it would take them a long, long time to get there. "I wonder if we can we make good cash selling crafted items because if so we might want to invest in those skills too. I'm sure a lot of people are too lazy to craft and would rather spend their cash on our stuff." And with that, she had just reached level 10.

"Yes!" She yelled, pumping her fist in a way that made her character sort of do the same, only with bow in hand. Soon she was taken to the leveling screen, where she spent a few more points on accuracy, and then got herself an evasion perk - just in case. "You had me at fountain, to be honest. Let's go big. Takes us longer but oh, the prize!"

"Blacksmithing can apparently get you the big bucks, but I don't want to put too many points into strength. If I keep popping up my agility stat my crit rate. At level twenty I get a skill that causes bleed damage on a critical hit." Cam sighed, then grumbled. "God, I sound like a fucking nerd." A pause and he continued. "I guess if we're slaughtering woodland creatures anyway I could always put ranks into hunting. We get more cash for the pelts-Oh god, Alex. Think my real-life ranks in bear-baiting will help us the fuck out?"

It was funnier in his head than it probably was out loud, but he laughed anyway. His coworkers would have liked it. Maybe. "You know, it's a good thing there aren't any adult games on this stupid thing or all the whores in town might be shit out of luck." He stopped, considering that for a moment. "Well, I wouldn't, being the prettiest, but there's got to be a market for this-SHIT!"

Suddenly Cam was at attention, spamming his skills at the new elite enemy. "Frost bear just spawned! On your...fuck...your six? God-fucking-dammit, how the hell does that work again? It's relative to how you're standing, right? Shit, I'm frozen! Baby, I can't move! Run run run!"

"Oh man I can't do that either strength does very little for my build." It did enough for hit points but dexterity was more her thing. They both sounded like nerds at this point, and Alex laughed when Cam pointed it out. He seemed to be onto something with hunting and selling the pelts, however, but that line of thought was lost at what Cam said next. The reaction was such that Alex lost momentary control of her avatar who must be making the craziest movements while Alex teared up in laughter. "Holy hell I can only hope so." She said between sniffles.

Making a sound of disagreement, Alex recovered from her laughter and went right back to killing bears with her bow. "I don't know I mean this is cool and all but I'm not actually holding a, a... well a bow in my han-" Alex was cut off by Cam's sudden curse, and she made her elf turn to face his character, standing head-to-head with an elite enemy. "Oh fuck oh shit I should've gone for fire arrow instead of poison! Yes my six, my six is behind me, directly behind me!" Luckily she had turned around as soon as she had heard his urgency.

Now any military training in the world did not account for bears that could freeze people in place. "Okay, okay, stay calm I'm going to find a perch that's safe and spam arrows on that fucker 'til one sticks. When you defrost get to safety!" With that said Alex started looking around for a safe place, which, them being in a forest and all, meant tree climbing. "Shit, can I climb this tree?" Without waiting for an answer Alex tried for something else, a slightly elevated space a ways away from where she had been standing. With luck, she could land a few shots on the bear before having to move again. She fired off twice before the bear got wind of her and came her way. "Ahhh shit! Please defrost soon!"

"Nonononononononononono," was the only thing Cam could manage for several seconds as the ice bear wandered away from him, only to be replaced by a small gang of his underlings. "Motherfucker." The instant the chill wore off he used his Blink skill to get as far away as possible, drinking a health potion and dashing around the fighting zone in an arc to assess the situation.

"Hold on, I'm launching myself at his ass." He targeted the elite, then once his Blink skill cooled down he spammed it again, this time in conjuction with his Backstab. Two critical hits in rapid succession, but the large animal's life bar barely moved. "Snookums, we need to find a reliable tank soon." He continued to attack even as he spoke, dashing away from the other regular bears as he focused his attention on the big one. It probably made more sense to kill the grunts first, but at least this way the ice bear had to divide its attention between both targets. "Think Gretch would join?" He stopped and thought about that for a second. "Wow, is that terrible? Assuming that because she's a fucking giantess that she'd want to play a warrior for us?"

"What?!" Even though she kept wandering around in circles Alex still had time to witness as the bear had underlings as some sort of special ability. "Are you kidding me?"

She wasn't sure whether to take care of the underlings or the source of the problem first, but they would be overrun soon either way. She went for the normal bears. "I increasingly see our need for one, yeah." She replied to Cam urgently, firing off normal arrows as she waited for all her cooldowns to reset. Cooldowns. Made sense but hell if they weren't frustrating sometimes. It took her a second to realize that when Cam said Gretch he meant Babs, and she honestly had no idea if her giant friend would join but she might just be game. "Well, yes and no? I mean whatever she plays at least we'd have someone else on our side. She might be game if we ask her really nicely. Don't you have friends who might want to join?"

One of the lesser bears was down for the count at this point, and while it was a small relief it was one anyway. "We'll have to do this until it's dead, Cam. Run around, spam abilities, run around some more. I hope you stay hydrated 'cause it's gonna get exhausting."

"Sweetiepie, I've got a list of references longer than you are. If these bears want me to go down they've gotta pay me first." Cam smirked a bit as his character dashed foward, using her Backstab ability one more time. The smaller bear cried out, but didn't fall, turning to follow after him as he backstepped away. "Shit, I need to put some skill points in trap making." He'd been meaning to do that for the past two levels, but there was always an ability that caught his attention every time he considered it. This time he would. He WOULD. "Do you have that passive skill that gives you increased damage to enemies within ten feet? Or is that a higher level one? I was looking earlier but I can't remember." A little early to consider more than one character, but looking never hurt anyone.

"I'm-" Truth be told after hearing Cam say that there had been nothing in Alex's mind that she wanted to say, so after the throwaway start she shut up, sighed, then chuckled to herself. "I shouldn't have focused only on archery. I mean I'm pretty accurate now, but my damage output isn't good enough yet. I wish I had traps. But dammit I'm sort of a hunter type, right? I can do this."

Straightening herself in place, Alex considered which of the remaining smaller bears she wanted to go after first - and then decided to finish what Cam had started. Points were going his way either way. She fired off one poisoned arrow and two normal ones, and the bear's energy bar finally moved below the middle.

"Okay, progress. I'd check if I do but I might not wanna pull up the screen just yet. But I think I get it next level, although I don't see why a ranged build would have that passive but whatever I'm not a gaming designer." She shot at the suffering bear some more, moving away from the god-forsaken frosted one. "What we need, Cam, is some sort of spellcaster with fire spells. Or maybe I'll just put points into fire arrows next level, when I get there. By my word this shall never happen to me again!"

"Both. We need both, honey." Cam replied, spamming skills once more at the frost bear. "If I'm going to be tanking until then, I think I might spend a skill to get Decoy. It just makes this useless version of me, no jokes, that sits there and draws enemy attacks for a while. I think I can level it up so it actually hits things later one, but if I'm going to be the one getting bitchslapped constantly I want to be able to tap out if I need to."

One of the bear's underlings dropped dead, and he sighed. "Think we could get your residential beefcake involved with this, too? If we can get him and Babs we'd be golden." Not that Cam had any ulterior motives for that one, but inviting eye candy along didn't serve him all that well if they were going to be running around in a fantasy world. "How's all that going, by the way? Talked to the Council about finding a place yet?"

"Well yeah but I can only take care of one of them!" Alex retorted, jumping around the place in between firing off abilities until they were all on cooldown. Another one almost down, and Alex sighed. "Good idea, in case we can't get a tank in here any time soon. There might be a way to re-attribute your points later."

Alex chuckled. "My beefcake? I don't know. Maybe. If we throw food into it, definitely. You bribe your amazon I'll bribe my beefcake, with luck we get one out of two and we're golden." Alex was almost sure she could bribe Teddy with some bacon, maybe a nice steak dinner. She wasn't sure they could make it a weekly thing, but they'd see about it later. Cam's question was met with a suffering sigh.

"Nope. I've been a little busy. I'll handle it soon enough." Not to mention, she was fairly certain her letter wasn't too far behind and that was even worse than the prospect of having to live without Teddy and Drake after so long in this arrangement. "I mostly don't wanna think about it."

A sympathetic noise escaped Cam, and he could feel a dramatic pout spreading over his face even though neither of them were in a position to appreciate it. All the while he continued to spread carnage, another small bear flopping to the ground as the big one tried to figure out which of the annoying little flies to beat the crap out of now.

"Well, you know." Cam shrugged his shoulder, again an action that she couldn't see. He did it anyway. "If they don't place you with hubby soon, I've been thinking about moving out of the brothel. Living where you work is convenient, but full of fucking whores. Literally and figuratively. Next time you want to think about it we can-AH shit, I'm frozen again. Sorry."

Funnily enough, Alex could feel his dramatic pout too as if she was seeing it in broad daylight. The big frost bear had apparently decided to come for her now, probably disoriented by the killing of another one of its minions (and perhaps the arrow that hit him on accident just seconds ago). That did not last long, however, as Cam did his tanking duty despite not being one at all and diverted the huge bear's attention while Alex spammed her abilities at another comparatively tiny bear.

"You want to move in with little old me?" Alex's voice went comically high at the last word, amusement perfectly noticeable in her tone, as was the grin that came with it. She was thankful, however, and willing to entertain the possibility - even if that meant he might have to dry her tears once or twice before she got used to the change in roommates. "I'll let you know when I'm ready to ta- ahh, fuck."

The bear was coming for her again, which put Alex on the move one more time while Cam defrosted. "You know, I bet we'd have grouped up with someone else if this were a weekend."

"Yeah, but then we'd have to wait until the weekend. And the game would be croweded as fuck by then," Cam replied as he watched the bear chase her around the area until he could move again. "I heard you guys were doing something this weekend, though. Maybe you should drag the whole posse here, get then all nicely addicted." Backstab. The bear turned and swiped at him, and his health dropped dangerously low. "A few more hits and I think we've got him. This bitch had better drop a legendary item for at least one of us."

Not as if there was much he could do about it if it didn't.

Cam had a point, which Alex grudgingly admitted to with a huff. And then he had a point again, though Alex wondered how likely it would be to get the whole unit to come play video games - not to mention they had banked on a stay-at-home kind of deal for this one, and Alex had wholeheartedly supported the notion. "Maybe. But I doubt it, once we've stuffed our faces good and proper I don't think we'll be moving two feet let alone all the way over here. What are you doing this weekend though? Maybe you could bring a nice posse around to take over the virtual world."

Alex was right there with the assist for the bear who swiped at Cam, sticking an arrow on the back of its head, then another, then some more poison and so on and so forth. "I hope you're right on both counts I swear this is more exhausting than actual military training." It wasn't, but it sure felt that way right now.

Cam snorted, a decidedly unattractive noise that he made a point to never shared in anything but the most genuinely appreciated company. "I really hope you don't mean that I should drag some of my coworkers down here. Could you imagine?" His voice took on the tone of a carnival sideshow announcer as he spammed the slash button at the giant bear. "Step right up, Kiddies! Otherworld proudly presents Prostitutes On Parade!- Oh hey!" His normal voice returned and he gasped with anticipation at the thought even before he shared it. "I wonder if I could get some clients addicted to this. I mean, not just to get paid to play, but let's face it,these chairs are optimally positioned for blowjobs."

The bear finally roared its last, stagging to the side and dropping, and Cam's victorious howl caused the speakers in his lounger to thrum for an instant before settling. "Legendary-....bow. Fucking bow. Here, I'm dropping it for you. Got anything good on your end?"

Not only could Alex imagine, she'd love to watch it, as well. She didn't see the issue. Even as Cam went on with his show announcer voice, Alex thought to chime in with her own point of view. "Well I mean it's not like they wear a label, they're perfectly normal citi- what?" When his voice changed she paused, then chuckled at the idea Cam had had, and then that chuckle turned into full blown laughter at the idea of blowing someone on one of those chairs. "Well hey when they're not particularly good maybe try to drag them here!"

When the bear dropped to the ground at last Alex let out an "Ahhhhh!" of relief, relaxing in her chair as she hadn't been able to before. She managed to snipe the last tiny bear as she cringed at Cam's howl, then placed her bow on her character's back and trotted happily around the corpses collecting loot.

"You're my hero!" A delighted squeal came out of Alex as he revealed the bear had dropped a bow. "I've got...hang on let me check. Okay, I've got a rare dagger which I'm dropping and you see whether you want it or not and a rare belt with high dexterity stats. And pelts! I'm going for it, I'm selling the pelts and starting a huge-castle-with-fountain fund."

"Deal," Cam nodded once, dropping the bow and sighing a bit at the lovely glow surrounding it. He was only just learning how to properly appreciate legendaries. He only had one, at the moment, a pair of boots that increased his speed and dash distance, and as a bonus made a fun little "whooshing" sound whenever he used it.

Next time, he silently swore, then went about looting his share of the pelts. "Alright, wanna head to the caves and slaughter some goblins? This is the first time I've ever said this, but bears are getting a little boring."

Hopping over to where Cam was standing, Alex dropped her items near his character and picked up the shiny new bow, marveling at the stats before letting her shoulders sag a bit as a sound of disappointment was let out of her. "Awww, it's level-capped to 11. I'm gonna have to wait. But that's okay, this is a good bow."

The caves sounded like a good grinding place, and for the mooment Alex was a little bit done with bears. "Yes, God, I can do without bears for a few. Goblin pelts aren't a thing, are they?" She asked as she positioned her character next to Cam's then made to move slowly toward where the caves were located.

"Crap, I don't know if they are, ducky. Probably not." Cam sighed, realizing as they moved that it was going to create a problem for the whole hunting and selling part of their 'rags to riches' plan. Oh well, they'd at least start leveling up faster. Better enemies meant better pelts, right? "I think their gold drop rate is really good, though. We can go slaughtering until we hit a couple more levels then try for the dark forest, maybe. Probably won't happen today, my levels are going a hell of a lot slower now."

The Dark Forest had a suggested level of fifteen, far above what both of them were at, and so far no one had leveled high enough to explore it. To be one of the first would be gloatworthy, even if no one knew exactly what sort of enemies were hanging around in there. "Actually, I think the goblins ride those big wolf things. I bet you could skin those bastards."

"Aww ducky. You have the best pet names for people. Or just me, whatever." Alex wasn't exactly bothered if goblins didn't drop pelts for the same reason that Cam wasn't either: it helped them raise in level, and that meant better pelts. "Oooh that's good! Gold is good. Okay let's go level up and get rich then. I don't think I've heard of the Dark Forest before, but it sounds terrifying. Can't wait."

Her character walked faster now, hopping excitedly around Cam whenever she stopped to wait for him to catch up. "You know what, I will! You do the goblins in, I'll do the wolf things. And vice-versa, doesn't matter in the end. We'll get our castle."
