There won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time...

Really? Not even on Mount Kilimanjaro? More accurately, there won't be snow in Australia this Christmas time, and you don't hear us writing songs about that.

Sorry, but - what are you on about, sweet? You're not- sick again, are you...?

No, no, it's a Christmas song that was played at me, terribly inaccurate lyrics.

Ahh, I see....! Well, I don't know about that, sweet; most people wouldn't know about - Mount Killmanjaro, would they? Or that it's snowy most times...

((Ooc: And what do you think of the NEW icon with "Rhonda" and Bumby? X-D <3 <3 <3))

Maybe not the listeners, but really, if you are going to write a song about Africa, and claim that it doesn't snow there, you really ought to do your research and check that is accurate, not just stick it in there and hope no one notices.

And whether or not it's snowing is really the least of Africa's problems.

((Ooc- Very cute)

Oh yes, I know... The GRID virus apparently originated in Africa, and is most prevalent there, so it seems!

((Ooc: Aww! x-D <3 I know rite? And it's not even really RHONDA's pb, as far as I can tell; but hey, it passes, doesn't it? X-D <3 <3 <3))

The GRID virus? It stands for - Gay Related Immune Deficiency, if I recall the news reports correctly... But really, straight people like us can get it, too! I mean, it seems to be a really killer virus that mainly attacks Muggles - but of course, I think that wizardkind is so divorced and segregated from the Muggle population, it's no wonder that we haven't caught it, yet....!

It's not actually called GRID anymore. Because that was just wrong. Both scientifically and ethically.

AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) which is a disease caused by a virus called HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).

Indeed, like my husband said, thanks for the correction, Doctor... This is the Doctor, yes, and not the one who merely looks like you, and is also cranky about being called "Sir"...? Heh...! Sorry, Doctor... Anyway's, thanks again for correcting me; I didn't know that it was now called AIDS (which really rolls off the tongue much so easier than GRID, rather!) because the last I knew of the world at large was in 1982!

It wasn't introduced to 'roll off the tongue' it was introduced because of the misleading and inaccuracy of the use of GRID. Besides, the term AIDS was first introduced in a meeting on the 27th July 1982 and by September that year was the official name everywhere.

And, yes, I'm the Doctor. I'm not cranky. I just don't like being called 'sir'.

Alright, you aren't cranky though you certainly sound it when you said that! Heh! And of course, it wasn't chosen to roll off the tongue, I do understand that; and as for 27th July 1982, well - I came here shortly before my birthday, on 23rd June 1982, so... yeah, I think I can be forgiven for not knowing of the AIDS name switch, don't you, Ernest sweet?

I wasn't implying that you shouldn't be. I was just informing you so you didn't end up crossing-wires with people who do know and are likely to react to a widely considered offensive term now.

You're showing off about how smart you are by mocking a song about people starving to death...not even a bit uncalled for

I'm not mocking people who are starving to death. If they want to highlight a real issue, they ought to write something with at least a minor effort of research. There is snow in Africa. There are also rivers flowing, many of them. Christmas is also celebrated in many parts of the continent.

If they want to do something about it, they might want to start with the facts, not attempt to pull on the heart strings with some arbitrary lyrics about Christmas time, so that people from the west will buy a song in order to alleviate their guilt about spending hundreds of pounds on food and gifts for one day when people are starving. Rutherford, plenty of people are starving on their doorsteps.

I can mock the song without mocking the people it is referring to. They seem to forget that Africa is a huge continent, full of many different people, and many problems that are never going to be solved through charity. What the continent needs is a radical overthrow of government, not a pop song laced with sentimental drivel that means nothing. I've been to Africa many times, and it's a beautiful continent with beautiful people. I am not mocking them. Only a ridiculous song. There is a big difference.

Also, it wasn't meant to show off how "smart" I am- it's a simple observation made because today is the first time I've ever heard the song.

Then maybe you should research too, it raised a hell of a lot of awareness, bought a vast amount of money into places that needed it...and tell your wife...GRID...no.

No? I'm still not sure what that even is.

Well.. the song's actually more about raising awareness of famine affecting regions of Africa, rather than Africa itself. It was a British Charity song highlighting the differences between a typical happy Human ('Western World', Northern Hemisphere) Christmas of the late 20th/early 21st century and what some poor souls Christmas - or lack of - season is actually like.

Thank you! That makes much more sense- I'd never heard it before. I wasn't intending to cause any offence, rather it just seemed a strange sort of song to me.
