Has anyone actually studied or ran any scans on these door things?
How do you know they're safe to go through? How do you know the air's breathable or non-toxic or..?
What's to stop something bad coming through from the other side?
Or that someone's not going to shoot you the second you step through?

This is why I still like MALPs and UAVs.

Because they have labels when they're active and the labels always have been accurate?

And the time they're not? This island seems to like to just screw with everyone, so for we know it could be luring us into a false sense of security about the doors.

Besides, how does a label tell you your not going to get shot or kidnapped or hit over the head with a big stick? Or stop something following you back through?

I suppose I could build some kind of tiny UAV, or Tony and Howard could, but I think you're worried over nothing.

Nobody other than island folk can even see the door.

So could I. And I worry over a lot of things, someone has to. I'm often proved right.

And puddlejumpers have cloaks but that doesn't always stop someone wandering into them if they follow you.

What the hell is a puddle jumper? I think you're overreacting but I'm sure we can come up with something.

It's a ship. I wanted to call them 'gate-ships' because they're ships that go through the gate but no. No, Sheppard, decided 'puddle jumper' instead.

Gate ships at least gives you an idea of what they do. Puddle jumper just makes you go 'huh?'

So you would fly these ships through the gate? Cool!

Yes! They're designed so their thrusters retract then they can fit through the stargate. They can only be activated by someone with an active ATA gene though.

The thrusters can change position? Neat! I'd love to look at one of these things someday.

Wait, they're genetically encoded?? That's some strong tech right there, especially since they aren't using magic.

There's been no scans that I know of. But there are people who scan the island for missing people and various other things, so maybe?

As mentioned, the doors are labelled. Usually at least one of the island residents has been to the locations on their side of the doors before. You can always ask on the network about the locations and not just about the air - but about food, languages spoken, appropriate clothing, etc.

I've grown up on the island and can tell you that bad things can come from anywhere. You can't start worrying about all the what ifs, there's too many of them to count.

Again just ask around - if the door opens to a dangerous place, people will let you know.

Hmm. Who might they be?

Yes but, what if the labels are wrong, then what? What happens when you get a door that nobody knows anything about?

That's pretty much my point. Sometimes you have to think of the 'what ifs'. Otherwise you could blow up an entire solar system... or two thirds of it.

Only if they know in advance. Some of the worlds we visited Teyla or Ronan assured us were friendly and fine to visit but they'd changed since they'd last been there.

I think Mr. Stark scanned for that missing baby a while ago. I'm not certain; you can always ask on the network to find out who has scanning capabilities.

The labels haven't been wrong during my lifetime.

Do you? I mean, I wouldn't be able to sleep if I thought what if those nightmares come back. Or have a glass of water if I thought what if this is the day the island decides to poison the water supply...It just goes on and on.

You could check the dates on the label before you go through them, see if anyone's been there from a specific time period. Or go right back to the island if you don't like what you find on the other side.

The doors give us a chance to experience something other than the island.

It only takes once.

As Chief Scientist on Atlantis, yes. I've already done the whole not sleeping thing with the nightmares. Try being the one experiencing them from the other side, it's amazing for your mental health.

This exactly my first experience of something like this, you know? I travel through wormholes to other planets on a daily basis. It's called precaution.

Urgh. Ignore the crap about the nightmares, ok?

Okay.

Many things only take once. I don't think anyone can imagine every bad thing that could happen, and even if they could, how would they deal with them all?

It's not my first experience either. I grew up here.

Are you volunteering to do scans and shit? Because so far I've been testing them by going through and having a look around.

I'm just saying, before we travel through the gate, we either send a MALP or UAV through first to scout the immediate area. Then a team can go through prepared.
