Mom,

So I went through the door to 1936 Coney Island and I tracked down Howard. After spending the day with the man that would become the drunken asshole that was my father, I am starting to understand why it is that people say I'm a lot like him.

He was charming and smart and funny and didn't even drink at all the whole time we were together. Not even wine with dinner. It was amazing seeing that side of him. I really wish that had been the man I'd grown up with because he would have been an amazing father.

I told him that I was his cousin Marcus. I know he'd never met Marcus at that point so I thought it would be safe. I think that I might have changed some history, though. But I'm really not sure that I care. I had a great time. It was the kind of day I always wish I'd gotten when I was a kid and I feel very lucky to have experienced it.

Maybe you and I can do dinner sometime soon? We don't talk nearly enough and I know that's mostly my fault. I do miss you, though. Let me know when you're available.

	That was the man I saw enough of still when I met your father that I stuck with him. I'm sorry I couldn't do more to pull him back toward that when you were a boy. You did an excellent job with Richie by the way, a fine young man. We can have dinner tomorrow if you want, I'm on schedule to work during the day but I should be free in the evening.
