I love summer. I love the sunshine and the storms and the swimming.

But I must ask, why do you all wear this thing called sunscreen to keep the sun from touching your skin? The sun is lovely.

Let us go find mangoes. They should be ripe, if there are any here.

I don't know about you, but I tend to burn pretty easily. I wear sunscreen so that I don't get a sunburn and end up looking like a ripened tomato, or a lobster.

Sunburn?

What's that?

Really? You've never had a sunburn before? That is amazing.

Its when you've been in the sun for far too long and if you don't protect it, it turns red and its hot to the touch and it hurts pretty bad. Sometimes if you aren't really careful, you wind up with blisters on your skin, I haven't gotten that badly burned, but I can tell you that even with your skin turning red it is really painful.

Elves cannot get sick, perhaps we cannot get sunburns either. It is possible.

Well, then you are very very lucky. But yes, that is why people wear sunscreen.

The sun exposes us to ultraviolet (UV) light, that can prematurely age the skin, causing wrinkling and age spots. It can also burn skin as already explained. Too much exposure can cause skin cancer. Sunscreen offers protection from UV light.

Oh, human sicknesses.

I don't need to worry about those.

Oh yes, I know. Mortals seem so miserable.

I wouldn't say miserable. Having things such as illness can make one more appreciative of their health.
