I wish every day I had died before Fingon, Elenwë. I recall the might of the balrogs with clear memory. A century is not long enough to forget the smell of burning hair and flesh, or to lose the sound of cracking whips and the strike of hammer on helm.

A millennium is not even enough to forget that they beat him into the dust and a pool of his own blood.

[...]

[...]

This place is cruel to return him to me, and want to take him away again. Where he goes I will follow him.

On the House of Fëanor the wrath of the Valar lieth from the West unto the uttermost East, and upon all that will follow them it shall be laid also.

What have we done, Elenwë?

Shhh, my love, Findekáno will heal.

You must not be so hard on yourself. His injury is not your fault, nor is what happened to the Ñoldor. How are you to blame for the deeds of your father?

I fear I must watch him die, twice. It is my father who led the Ñoldor from Valinor, but I who lead them in Beleriand.

The deeds of my father are too deeds of my own.

He will not die. We are all with him and we will heal him. There are no balrogs here to strike him down before you.

They are not. You followed out of duty and were forced to deal with what you had when he was gone.

Stay with Findekáno. Your love will keep him strong.

I have seen a thing I cannot conceive of strike him down. It was no working of Morgoth, or any of the Valar.

A thing of metal.

I was afraid.

It is no shame to be afraid, Russandol. If I had seen such a thing, I would be afraid as well.

This place is full of strange and frightening things.

Only the ignorant would not fear them.

Aye, I know it.

I let a man die so I could save Kano.

Ai, that is grievous news, Maitimo.

But you cannot be blamed; most would do the same in your position.

Who was it who was lost?
