Backdated; 23rd April, Evening ( Email to Grantaire, Eames and Gatsby )
Dear Gentlemen,
It has come to my attention that a man has arrived here - a dangerous man of great evil and malice, who takes pleasure in causing the pain and misfortune of others and who, should he be allowed to continue on as he pleases in this place, will surely be a scourge on our small and vulnerable society. I regret to inform you that, within the short time he has been present on the island, he has already caused substantial physical and emotional harm to Mademoiselle Thénardier - an occurrence I, for one, do not feel able to overlook.
I will be the first to admit that I am a proud man but, in this circumstance, I feel this extends to more than a matter of pride. Mademoiselle Thénardier has come to mean a great deal to me and I feel that I would not be fulfilling my duties as a friend or a man should I ignore this incident and let it pass by without response.
I understand that each of you has also formed an attachment to the young lady in question and it is for that reason that I request your assistance today in this grave matter. This man must be found and stopped before he is given the opportunity to cause further harm, to Mademoiselle Thénardier or any other person.
I cannot lie; what I ask of you may prove not to be without risk. The man, one Montparnasse, is a known murderer and blackguard and I would not feel as though I were being honest with you if I did not warn you of the possible harm that may come to your persons should you agree to face him by my side.
However, I need your help, gentlemen. I cannot do this alone, although I will if I must, for Mademoiselle Thénardier's sake and for the sakes of all the vulnerable of this island.
