Backdated; 23rd April, Evening
( Email to Grantaire, Eames and Gatsby )

Dear Gentlemen,

It has come to my attention that a man has arrived here - a dangerous man of great evil and malice, who takes pleasure in causing the pain and misfortune of others and who, should he be allowed to continue on as he pleases in this place, will surely be a scourge on our small and vulnerable society. I regret to inform you that, within the short time he has been present on the island, he has already caused substantial physical and emotional harm to Mademoiselle Thénardier - an occurrence I, for one, do not feel able to overlook.

I will be the first to admit that I am a proud man but, in this circumstance, I feel this extends to more than a matter of pride. Mademoiselle Thénardier has come to mean a great deal to me and I feel that I would not be fulfilling my duties as a friend or a man should I ignore this incident and let it pass by without response.

I understand that each of you has also formed an attachment to the young lady in question and it is for that reason that I request your assistance today in this grave matter. This man must be found and stopped before he is given the opportunity to cause further harm, to Mademoiselle Thénardier or any other person.

I cannot lie; what I ask of you may prove not to be without risk. The man, one Montparnasse, is a known murderer and blackguard and I would not feel as though I were being honest with you if I did not warn you of the possible harm that may come to your persons should you agree to face him by my side.

However, I need your help, gentlemen. I cannot do this alone, although I will if I must, for Mademoiselle Thénardier's sake and for the sakes of all the vulnerable of this island.

Yours,

Enjolras

Dear Enjolras,

I am distressed to hear that such a man has arrived, and that he has caused Miss Thénardier to come to harm. You are certainly correct- such a man must be stopped immediately. If we were to overlook such an act, then it would seem that we are as cruel and cold as he. It cannot be done, there must be some justice.

I am sorry to report that I believe this man is also responsible for causing physical harm to my dear friend, Nick Carraway. In a seemingly random and unprovoked attack, Nick came to me with a bloodied nose and rapidly swelling eye. Understandably, he has been terribly shaken by this attack, as we were under the impression that the people of this island were of a decent and peaceful nature. I do not wish for him, or anyone else, to be afraid to roam the streets, simply because of one man who thinks he can do as he pleases, and cares not what pain he causes.

I appreciate your concern, but I care very little for the risk. I feel that the risk would be much greater if we were to let him continue unchecked.

In case it was not clear already, I will gladly assist you in this endeavour.

Yours,

J. Gatsby

Monsieur Gatsby,

Thank you. Your assistance would be most welcome.

I am terribly sorry to hear of the misfortune of your friend, Monsieur Carraway. Still, I cannot help but feel that the incident illustrates my point precisely. Perhaps, if he feels capable, Monsiuer Carraway would be prepared to accompany us and identify the individual who attacked him? If fear that, otherwise, we will be walking into this misadventure completely blind.

Of course, I fully understand if Monsieur Carraway wants nothing further to do with the individual. However, I do hope he and you will be able to see the value that may be gained by his involvement.

With gratitude,

Enjolras
