I think it would be interesting to meet one of your women from the woods! I should like to know her, at least in brief. My mother finds it very strange that Men are able to love and share themselves with more than one person.

And it is very strange. I could never imagine doing it myself. But it is very natural for humans isn't it?

It hurts them so much. Do you see it?

If they loved but once then they would not be so pained. The music is discordant.

It is natural. But you must understand that when we die, we die forever, and there is no chance of us coming back.

But I do not think I would like you to meet them, Itarillë. They are not important anymore.

I know it. But if you loved but once while you were both alive and then again when one is gone it would be less painful, I suppose.

I don't know. It brings so much sorrow, is all.

And they were important to you. And part of your life for a time, why should I deny that? Or why should you, for that matter.

I am not sure that you understand.

Some of them were part of my life for a few hours. Or a few weeks. It wasn't love, Itarillë, although we all parted on good terms. It was never love. It was never meant to be.

None of them loved me, either. It was just...passion. Fulfilling needs. We did not bring each other sorrow.

It is very strange to imagine.
To be with one for such a short time. Wasn't there a connection in your passion?

You are right.
I do not understand.

We were attracted to each other, obviously. But more than that? No. We were not in love. Sex and love do not have to be the same thing, to Men.

How do you lay with someone you do not feel for?

You just do? I don't know how to answer that, love.

Hm, I suppose if the need is great. And you were very young.. the need is greater when you are young, isn't it?

For some, perhaps. My need became greater when I met you.

Oh, I enjoy it. I did not know what desire was like until you, you know.

Is that true? Elves do not even feel desire until they meet the one?

I did not, until I met you. I did not think of it, I had other occupations.

What of those who have loved, but are sundered from those they love? Do they feel desire towards others?

Valar, no. The sexual act is marriage, and we marry for love. And we love but once, so it would be a lie to say we desire another once we have given our hearts. My father has never looked at another elf maid in that way.

But Maeglin..

He looks at me oddly, though I am married.

I do not like Maeglin. I do not like him at all. And I have a feeling that it is very mutual.

Your mother is beautiful. Your father would be a fool to look elsewhere, and he is not.

His spirit is dark, and his thoughts darker. And not only because he is from Nan Elmoth.

I adore my mother! I missed her so, and now she is returned to me. It will be good for Maedhros that she stay with him, don't you think?

I should have liked it had he stayed in Nan Elmoth.

It is a strange thing for me to think of, Itarillë. I would not like you staying alone with a strange man were I not there. I would be jealous.

Maedhros isn't strange. Though, aye, to you the Fëanorians must all be strange. They are a different breed. My mother has always known him, it seems.

And they have always been close?

I thought that your father did not like the Fëanorians.

Mm, always. And always my father has been distant with them. And hateful, since the ship burning at Losgar.

Tuor! Of course she does. They are friends. Is she not allowed friends?

What? This really is not strange to you?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]itarille

Nay! It is not. She is married to my father, and Maedhros is very distinctly not interested in her in turn.

Would your father take it so lightly?

[info]itarille

Not now, because he is so angry with them. And not even out of jealousy, really. He trusts my mother and she him.

I wish I had known him when they were together. Knowing them both separately...I cannot imagine them as a couple. They are so different.

Oh yes, they are as different as Laurelin and Telperion. But together they still make the Light.

Happy. They were so beautiful and so in tune with each other. Not just husband and wife. But partners in all things.

Artists! You can imagine. They would talk and talk and there was so much laughter. They supported each other, and allowed each other to make mistakes without reprimand or shame.

Friends, you know, well before they were married.

I love you, Itarillë. Like that.

I wish that I was as much of an artist as my mother, that I might paint the face of your father for you.

I love you, though, so deeply. My dearest heart.
