I should introduce myself properly, now that I am sure the dangers of my homeland have not followed me here. My name is Katarin, I am sixteen years old, and I am from Kordala, a once-great land which now suffers under foreign occupation. It seems safe to tell you that the Delvonian invaders killed my family. The ruler of Kordala was my cousin, and to my knowledge I am the last survivor of the Tavehi line - but I was fighting to free my homeland, not to rule over it.

I know that there are many people with many talents here, and so I make this request. I have an iron band at my wrist that I cannot remove. The enemy's doing, because they wished to prevent both our religious rites and our use of magic against them. I think it will take someone without magic to remove it without suffering harm. Might anyone help?

What are you thinking, a hacksaw and a steady hand? How thick is it?

Yes, I think that should do it. It isn't excessively thick, it didn't need to be. Could you try, at least? Except you mustn't if you have any magic at all, because then it'll half-kill you no matter how mundane your tools are. I don't want to hurt anyone.

Sure, I'll give it a bash. I'm as human as they come, without a scrap of magic about me at all.

Name's Hemingway. I'll see what tools I can find, and you can let me know where you want to meet.

My people are not any less human because of our magic regardless of what is claimed by

But thank you! You are very kind! I have claimed some rooms on the second wheel, perhaps you could meet with me there? It is probably better that we don't draw an audience, just in case it should go wrong.

Oh, sure, I've known plenty of humans with magic. I just meant that I'm not a God, or anything supernatural that might be a problem either.

Not a problem. Shepard has offered use of the Normandy. No one else can get in, it's secure as hell, and we can try everything. It's at [location].

Oh, I understand! I will have to get used to this. Everyone was human on my planet. Everyone you could talk to, at least.

That is very thoughtful of the commander. What is the Normandy? What sort of building, I mean? I'll try anything that might work. I'm not frightened. Only I have to say - well the only thing I've seen work is taking the hand right off, and I don't want that. It's not worth that. The man who I know did that died of the wound fever afterwards anyway, and the woman I lived with said he was probably cursed. But we all had too much magic for anything else to be possible, so I hope that with you it is different.

Everyone was human on mine, too. You do get used to it in time.

Sorry, I forgot to mention it's defining feature - and Shep will be butting in to correct me in a minute no doubt, but to my mind it's a fucking huge spaceship.

I promise not to cut your hand off.

I believe you, no matter how strange it seems. Every other time I have thought I never could get used to something I have been wrong about it.

Truly? Travelling into space was a notion for storytellers where I'm from. It will be wonderful to see it! I shall try not to be too distracted.

That's appreciated. I had to mention it, because you never know what notions people will have.

Traveling to space was equally alien to me. I'm from Earth, but an earlier era than the majority here. I'm sure Shep wouldn't mind showing you around once we've got you free.

Sure, sure. Don't worry, I'm not the chop off body parts without consent kind of guy.

I'll head over now if it suits.

Then you know how incredible all of this is!

I trust you. Yes, we can meet now! I will try to make my way to the Normandy. I doubt it'll be too difficult to find.

Hey, bring her to the Normandy, I have more than a hacksaw you can use. And you can lock out everyone else. I'd offer to do it but I think I'm in the gray area as far as magic goes.

Good idea. I was just thinking I’ll need a vice or something, and having a range of tools to try is ideal.

Not cutting off things is also a good idea.

Definitely leaning towards the not cutting body parts off option. Hers or mine.

Okay, I've told JARVIS that you have run of the ship. So you'll have to relinquish it when you're done. He'll give you directions to the R&D section of the ship and give you guidance in using stuff if you should need it.

I don't think you'll need it, but good luck.

Hi Katarin. I am Suzume Thorsdóttir. I am sorry to hear about your family. I see that people are already helping you but if you need anything besides that, let me know. Or just a friendly ear to talk to.

Thank you, I appreciate that. I would like very much to meet some other people here. There is so much to adjust to. Have you been here for very long?

Straight to the difficult questions. :-) I've been here, like this, for almost two years now. Before that, I remember two timelines. One belongs to the world I am originally from. In the other, I arrive in a parallel universe to this when I was younger. I grew up there. It's very similar to this timeline but there were some things different.

I'm 19, btw. It's nice to see people here closer to my age.

I didn't realise they would be so difficult! I don't really understand all of that. It sounds very complicated.

Most of the people I've met so far have been older. I didn't really notice before! I didn't know many people close to my age in my homeland, either, although there were a few in the village. This isn't my first language - is btw a scribing error?

It's okay. It is very complicated.

My cousins are a little younger than you. You might get along. Btw means 'by the way'. It's an abbreviation used when typing. If it is easier for you, I can switch to the All-Tongue. It will let you understand my words in your primary language.
