All aboard the teacher train!

I have a few skills I would be happy to share, although I wonder with this new ship we're on and the sheer amount of children we have if we should not consider a long-term education solution? Where I'm from I was part of a group that instructed in swimming for any age. We regularly met twice a week to practice. I know a tail fin isn't the same as legs but I was surely the best instructor there!

Anyway, what do we all think about preparing a school? The kids are pretty young now but they won't be for long, I hope. Do we share in teaching? Does anyone here come from a teaching background that would be there all day? I don't know really how to start that kind of thing but I'm glad to help.

Cris says he'd like to help, too. And if you need him he's at his apartment. Moping. Poor guy.

Anyway, anyway...For now I'm glad to offer swim lessons, instrument lessons, and if you're actually a nerd like me I will happily host tabletop gaming. All of my fantastic skills are great for all ages.

;)

A lot of the kids from the future have told me that I was their piano teacher. So some form of school got set up back on the island.

You were and there was. Mine won't need it for a few years yet but better to get things figured out sooner rather than later.

Hey! That's awesome! Maybe we can have music classes! I'm best at woodwinds and some guitar. I never learned piano.

I could help with reading and writing. I used to do it a little bit on the island before I got sent back to the past.

I've taught before, when I was at college. I can teach biological sciences, and specialized in genetics. If required, I can cover chemistry as well.

What? Oh, no. I mean, you're a geneticist. You're from the future, aren't you?

I'm Dr. Marta Cross. I'm a Biochemist, with post-doctoral fellowships in Virology and Genetics. I want to talk to you because I want to find out what's happened in the future. What we're capable of.

Oh! Sure, that's more than fine! I'm Dr. Miguel O'Hara, and yeah, I'm from the future. 2099.

My labspace is here [directions from the food court], and I share it with Dr. Sarah Sully. I don't think she'd mind if you came round for a visit.

I think we're going to have a surplus of science teachers, Rohan.

I can cover biology and chemistry as well, if needed. Or basic beginner's science.

Regular school kinda is, yeah. I won't lie, I struggled with it too when I was your age. But there aren't any other kids your age around right now so it'd mostly be one on one.

Hopefully you'll be blue again be

All the geniuses here on the station? They're bound to figure out how to make learning about stuff interesting. I know I always did better on more hands on stuff than classroom instruction, but sometimes you have to endure that so you can understand the why behind the interesting stuff.

I don't know if anyone will be interested, but I taught my daughters how to be shieldmaidens, and how to defend our village. Katherine seemed to take to it well.

You'd be open to teaching boys the art of the sword as well as girls? I don't know that there's a practical need to teach swordfighting but as a form of PT it could be handy.

PT? And sword fighting is always practical, guns can miss, but if you're close with a sword, or a small blade, and a shield, usually you don't miss. Also depending on the creature, bullets may be useless.

Physical training. Exercise.

My experience with swords is limited to enemy officers using them in charges. They usually died before they got within range to use them.

Oh. Well, it is that, especially with real swords, properly weighted swords.

That's because they didn't know how to use them properly. The moment guns started to be used, knowledge of everything else before it slipped right out of their minds.

Right.

Eh, the Japanese prided themselves on the Samurai traditions. A sword isn't going to do you any good if you've got an entire infantry battalion shooting at you and your people, especially with heavy machine guns.

But still, even just the exercise and mental discipline would come in handy if nothing else.

You're right, just a sword won't do you any good. But I was in the wars. I still used my sword and shield over something that could jam, and bow up in your face. And I was glancing arrows off "just a sword" before I became vampire.

You're not wrong.

Our rifles meant the difference between life and death, we took better care of them than we did ourselves.

There were a few times the k-bar knife and bayonet came in handy on the 'Canal, I can't deny. Not so much afterwards, but that first campaign was the worst.

Yes, I'll try to forget men scrambling over the dead for just one more bullet, and all the mud in the foxholes. Not to mention the added humiliation of having to dress like a man because 'women were too soft for war'.

I was at Normandy, to name a few places. But all were about as far from the 'Canal as one could get and stay in that part of the world.

I don't mean to get into a dick measuring contest, especially since neither of us have them at the moment. It was just the closest we ever came to being destroyed or starved during my time in the war.

Yeah, I'm glad I didn't have to go to Tarawa, Iwo or Okinawa. Pelielu was in many ways worse than Guadalcanal, but we never had to worry about not having enough supplies.

Yes, the Chinese were genius in creating that sort of thing.

You were lucky. Being a vampire I didn't either, I just had to avoid the sun. But the Nazis were despicable fuckers.

I feel the same. I'd like to offer self defense to the pile. I could also teach some history, although does that apply to space? I only know Earth's history pre-2017 and it is a history that does not include superheroes or aliens from space.

I could help with both of those.

And all those times I snuck off to spend time in the woods with uncle Jake instead of going to school gives me a halfway decent understanding of plants and animals, though I admit it isn't anywhere near comprehensive I'm not dad or Tommy. So if we wanted to do 'field trips' up to the parks and ag domes for those subjects I could help with that.
