This might sound kind of strange, but is there anyone who'd be able to teach me how to knit?

Hey, you should ask Thor. He knitted me an awesome scarf.

Really? I never would have imagined. Good to know, thanks.

Your uncle is full of surprises!

How have you been, anyhow?

One word: happy.

You?

That's really great to hear. Any reason in particular?

I'm doing pretty good, thanks. My kid just got married, so that's made me happy lately. I mean, I feel pretty damn old, but happy.

The main two: a fantastic man and a very supportive family.

Who knows, the island might decide to make you immortal in a year or two and you will end up outliving most of us. ;-)

Well, that's more than enough of a reason. That's swell.

Christ. I'm not sure how good I would feel about that. Mortality has its limited perks.

It really is.

What would you say those are?

Well, unless those I love are also immortal, I'd end up watching my family and friends grow old and die, including any children or grandchildren. That sounds entirely miserable.

And I wonder if I would just keep putting things off to do later because I wouldn't run out of time. I like to cram a lot in to my compartively short existence.

Plus, I find the concept of suicide oddly comforting.

I guess having a long living family helps. A hundred years for a lifespan just sounds so depressing. When will I do all the things I want? I already have no time.

How about a form of immortality where you can still choose when to step off the train?

I try to cram as much in as I can. Like I say, knowing time is limited makes me want to do things now, not procrastinate over it.

Although, ironically I'm enjoying a slightly slower pace here. There's something to be said for just being content in the moment.

That would be a good compromise, yeah. Immortality until I decided it was time to check out. Then again... risk is fun. You know, that buzz of adrenaline when you look death in the eye and manage to escape for a while longer.

But what if there are things that cannot be crammed into your schedule anymore? I'm no procrastinator. But it will take me human lifetimes to achieve the things I'd like to achieve.

If you do not have enough time, compromises need to be made.

I do enjoy a bit of thrill but not the prospect of death. My life is too important for others. Without my family, it'd be there in the boat with you.

I suppose then you have to learn to prioritize. I've spent a lot of time being selfish with my ambitions, focusing on what I want to achieve more than on the people around me.

Yes. Compromise is certainly a learning curve.

It's good that you recognize that. I don't know that my life was particularly important to anyone before I came here. I still find myself doing silly things, but it has put it into perspective.

My mother's gone.

Shit

I'm so sorry, Amy. Truly.

I know it is a poor comfort at a time like this, but please know that you are very much a part of our family. If there's anything we can do to make things easier, you can always come to us.

Shit, I'd forgotten all about

Of course.

I'd guess you aren't feeling much up to a honeymoon? But if you do feel like getting away with Jack for a while, I'm sure Abi and I would manage.

It's not a problem. We have to make sure these things, as awful as they are, make us stick closer together, not pull apart out of fear.

It's taken Charlie's dad and step-mom away, as well.

It's difficult to find the words. Right now, he knows they're not here at the moment. This island is confusing to an adult, never mind a three year old. I don't want us to tell him they're gone only for them to reappear next week. But at the same time, honesty is the best policy... I don't know, it's difficult.
